Does anyone know a procedure for disabling the speedometer on a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee when towing.

We have a 2005 Grand Cherokee and the speedometer doesn't do anything while we are towing. Are you sure you have the transfer case in neutral? Are you towing a 4x4 or 2x4?

All systems must be off. Key is on ACC. Not lock not on. If the key is on then you may record miles. Just check your key position.

If you haven't gotten the answer yet, please email me and I'll go out to our Jeep and get my directions that I've "corrected" from the ones the Jeep manual (for the 2005 Jeep) gives INCORRECTLY. I've complained to Jeep about the manual, but never heard anything. The manual is misleading. It's a bit different from the older Jeep directions. (We had a 1999 previously).
You shouldn't have miles racking up if doing it properly.

When towing a Jeep the key must be in the off position. On a Liberty that is one position back from the normal running position. In that position everything is off but the locking mechanism for the steering wheel is not engaged so that the wheels can turn going around corners. Late model Jeeps have a digital odometer that like everything else will be off and will not record mileage. There is no secret little device in there recording the mileage to show a new mileage the next time that the odometer is on.
If you are new to towing flat, a word of caution about attempting to back up. The front wheels of a vehicle are not perfectly straight up and down. There is a tilt called the caster. Among other things this helps keep the wheels turned in the direction of the travel. It is the caster that makes the wheels turn when the tow is pulled around a corner while being pulled by the coach. However when you attempt to back up the caster tries, and I mean tries very hard to cause the front wheels to whip around and face in the direction of travel. Supermarket carts have caster wheels with the same principles in operation. If you push one ahead when the wheels are the wrong way, note how quickly the spin around. Of course the front wheels on a vehicle can't turn all the way but they will sure try. It is a powerful force and you can't get in the car and try to stop it. More than one person has had his arm through the steering wheel and broke his wrist trying. Never try to back up a tow more that a few inches. You may get away with it a few times but sooner or later the road conditions are going to spell disaster.

The 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have a steering lock and can be towed with the ignition key turned off and removed. This is great because you can lock the car. As mentioned earlier if the transfer case is in neutral the speedometer will not record.

Are you sure it is recording? We have towed 4 Jeeps and never had a problem. That is why we tow Jeeps :-)
