I was on the roof today, cleaning it in preparation for a semi-annual application of 301, and noticed the demarkation line between the roof cap and sides was starting to discolor, and in some areas, flake away when I tried to clean it. Has anyone experienced this? What did you do to keep the discolored demarkation line (now somewhat jagged) from migrating down the sides?

Dick,
My 1997 Affinity had the problem when I bought it. I couldn't make it stop or look better. The cause was stated as this: "The white paint and the clear coat were not compatible." I wound up having it sanded off and repainted at Guarantee RV's paint shop in Junction City. They guarantee it for life. (mine or the coach, I don't know). It hasen't peeled since.
Good Luck. Claude

If it was "paint incompatibility", they still had the same conflict two years later because my "99" Intrigue did the same thing. I finally gave up, had the old stuff sanded, and new clear-coat applied. Voila!!! end of problem.

We had the same problem with our 98 Intrigue. The folks at CC recommended trimming the jagged clear coat with a razor blade and applying the 303. That was almost two years ago and it stopped the peeling and the 303 stopped the chalking.

Inside storage when not in use work wonders. I know its not cheap but neither were our coaches. I hate to invest that much and let the weather beat it up.

So who makes 301 and 303?
Thanks,

303 Aerospace Protectant. We buy ours at Camping World but it is also available at stores that sell marine supplies.

We have a 93 Affinity with the same problen real bad and was told it's just the nature of the beast. We had big spots of the white come off and more going to come off. None of the blue has done this. What did it cost to recoat with clear coat? 93 Affinity 4902

There was a long thread about this a couple of years ago. At that point someone who knew a lot about paints, etc. explained that CC does not paint the gelcoat of our roofs. The clearcoat that is applied up and just over the edge of the roofline does not stick to gelcoat well, hence after a period of time, the clearcoat tends to flake off...gradually extending down the sides. You need to prevent this from happening.
Hence, the solution that several have found, is to have a band of paint applied to the gelcoat of the roof, only extending a foot or so onto the roof. Then, apply the clearcoat, and seal the edge.
We just had it done by Artistry in Motion in Junction City and were pleased. Total cost which involved a bit of other painting was $2000. (40' rig) They said that this should totally prevent any reoccurance of the peeling. Others have had it done by various painting places...hopefully they'll chime in with their recommendations for other parts of the country.
Putting 303 on the roof is a different matter...that just eliminates the chalking that happens to gelcoat. We apply 303 3-4 times a year, but we're fulltimers and have the rig out all the time...and usually in the sun! By doing this we never have had any chalking.

Hi Folks,
As mention, there has been several threads at diffentent times on this subject. The best solution is the use of an elastomeric coating which will stretch with the unsecured fiberglass roof. Several companies make such a coating which can be googled. They run about $50 per gal.
Application can be made with a HVLP sprayer or rolled on. Preparation is sanding with steel wool especially all the way to the secure band around the sides. Total cost is about $250 if you do the labor. A HVLP sprayer is about $40 or $100 depending which type you select from harbor freight.
