What documents are required at U.S. border crossings when U.S. citizens re-enter the U.S. from Canada by land?

-We had passports and that was it except for the dog. They wanted to know that the dog food was not made in Canada. No meat products from Canada at all, they checked my fridge.

WE used a passport for each person, and kennel papers for our dog. Since everyone needs a passport now days we never asked if you could use anything else. Also carry a rabbies certificate for the dog plus a Canadain and US insurance card for each vehicle.

On Sept. 16th we crossed into Canada and returned the same day with just our driver's license and birth certificates at Niagara Falls.

THis morning on the news the buzz was that as of today, Oct 1 a passport is required for Air travel. Didnt say when it was needed for land crossings, but that there was a delay since the passpost office is backed up so bad with orders.

I believe you can get by with a photo ID still. I had read they were going to extend the deadline on the passport requirement for awhile yet. The best bet is to either go online to the customs web site or call us customs.

I believe a passport will be required for land crossing on January 1, 2008. With pets be sure to have your rabies and shot records just in case.
