The bottom line to this quality issue is the one thing that really helps the consumer. Responsibility, for the result.
An example from the boating world ownership would work so well in the RV world. Pre purchase surveys on your new RV'. This would send mega waves throughout the industry. It also would be very helpful to all the owners who simply relied on the back yard mechanics, questionable suppliers, untrained workers putting together half million dollar coaches.
Correction of issues before we take ownership. Seller cant fix something prior to delivery..fine, money hold back. Can you see the people at Lazy Days rather then bragging about how many coaches they can pump out. Now we have a independent person working for us. I for one would be all for it and probably would have never gone through all the problems I had. The second time around we know what to look for, don't we. It would in some cases be the best money ever spent ! Would you agree? Al

Al,
I could not agree more. Having spent the past 7 years on my Fountaine-Pajot Bahia cruising around the Caribbean. Before I bought the boat, I hired a surveyor form Trinidad and after 5 days on the boat, we came up with about $28,000.00 US in things that needed attention. I made my final offer and reduced that amount by $50,000.00 US to take care of the deficiecies. We were both (owners and me) were happy and from there, we had no major problems for the wonderful years of cruising. Someone could make a really nice living in then coach surveying business. Before I bought my current coach, I asked several RV shops if they knew of any surveyors and none of them knew what I was talking about and never heard of anyone doing that as a business. However, after my sears of sailing, I pretty well know what to look for in a coach and am extremely happy with mine.

Jay, Thanks for your kind e-mail. I' am one of the lucky ones on the boat survey. I wrote a check for $600.00 plus some travel expenses and save myself a $345,000.00 problem purchase mistake. Without going in to all the boring details the largest item was an engine mounting/securing issue. That, my friends was a item traced right back to the boat manufacture. The original owner never knew as he never did a pre purchase survey. You know it was fixable problem but at least I had the choice in the matter. The golden rule...He who holds the gold rules".
I owned 13 boats before going to RV and I believed I knew enough to be a smart purchaser. I was just fresh meat.
We all know why coach mfg. would shake in there wallet if this RV surveys ever take hold. There will be some players folding up there cards. They would be held more accountable.

Jay & Al,
You are both 100% correct.
I currently have a Ketch in Puerto Vallarta and of course have learned quite a bit about systems and what to look for but Marine Surveyors provide a non emotional look and some form of legitimate written report to make a comparison and decision.
From the "Links" on this group forum I stumbled across a company that claims to provide a similar service.
