We are in our 15th year of fulltiming in the same old coach. Boondock a majority of the time and use the 6 batteries hard. When we see the voltage drop fast after a full charge, it is time to equalize, which is usually about every 6 to 8 weeks. Now have residential refer, so will see what that does to the routine. When equalizing, I do open the bay door for more air movement as the batteries do get hot.

Bill, when you equalize your batteries do you turn off via power switch, unplug or turn off any breakers to protect any sensitive electronics ? I am in the process of making sure my batteries are fully charged before I equalize per the Xantrax manual. Am I missing anything else ?

I start the equalizing when we are going to bed and have never turned off anything that is 12v or 110v. At that time the only thing using 12v is the refer as all the lights are off. My Xantrex 2000 takes 8 hours and then shuts down. Last months I switched to a Magnum 2012-20B to have a pure sine wave and it's manual says 4hours, will have to reread to be sure.

Itis a very bad idea to leave 12v items connected when equalizing. Can go up to 16v. 110 is irrelevant.

I just equailized my batteries. Followed Xantrax manual. The manual stated to use the two disconect switches. Batteries were reading 11.9 so I plugged in to my 30 amp plug at home. When they were fully charged I started the equalize process. My manual said to make sure batteries are fully charged. Manual said it would take one hour to equailize, and that is how long it took. Thank you Mr. Dane for the information earlier

Wow, that is a fast equalize. Glad you were able to get it done. My 2000 modified sine wave did take 8 hours. During the process, they would get hot and I could hear them bubbling. Was told the bubbling was what knocked the sulfate from the plates. Compare it to shaking a orange juice container to get all the good stuff mixed. Your batteries should perform good now.
