I don't recall anyone commenting on Caterpillar engines used in Country Coaches. All the messages (and sometime problems) seem to be about Cummins. Isn't there anything, good or bad, to be said about Cats? Thank you. Rick

We received two recall notices yesterday (same item - one regular mail, the other registered mail) concerning a recall on 1995 through 2001 Allure and Intrigue coaches both on Gillig and Dynomax chassis'.
The problem concerns the tire pressure inflation decal that apparently shows inadequate pressure for the axle weights of these vehicles and calls for the replacement of the decal along with two, four or all six of the tires. The situation is stated to be a possible safety hazard.
Turns out that the numerous posts and considerable confusion regarding this issue was justified. Reason for the problem was stated as incorrect calculations! The downside of the process is that it appears the work has to be performed by an authorized CC shop which, for us, is an eighteen hour round trip.

I'm sure CC will authorize a truck tire shop to swap out the tires for you.
I had a couple front tires replaced under similar circumstances several years ago and called CC and said I'd like to use a local truck tire shop and they authorized it. They shipped the tires to the shop; I paid the shop for the labor (mount/balance) and CC reimbursed me. Good luck.

Hi Peter, I received the same recall notice.
Mine clearly states at the top of the letter that the recall only involves new Federal tire stickers, a fifteen minute job.
As your coach 11066 is very close to mine I suspect your recall is the same. Not really necessary to rush out and drive eighteen hours for the change, just something to add to the list for your next service visit.
I rather wish they had included a copy of what the new Federal sticker says. At least then owners would understand what the change means to them prior to going to an authorized service center.
To me it appears the bigger problem is for owners of coaches with the smaller tire size, be they Allures or Intrigues.
If I read the recall notice correctly, some of these owners will get all their tires replaced free of charge. If I had one of those coaches and several thousand miles on the tires, the opportunity to get a new set without cost would be worth a long drive.
Incidently, our 11062 had the fan temp sensor replaced and the settings reprogrammed to latest specs while at CC rally (no cost). Big improvement.
Also, rocker cover bolts replaced by Cummins (no cost) after we discovered one bolt sheared in half.
I mention these items as a "heads up" in case you experience the same problem, and as your coach was born the same week as mine.

From whom did you receive the recall notice? Do you know if this holds true for second owners of these vehicles? I have not heard anything so am intrigued...I have a 2000 Allure #30493 with the Toyo 12R22.5 tires.
I think these are the larger size tires so the recall may not apply to me. Can anyone enlighten me?

Recall on my newly purchased 95 Magna was graciously handled by CC.
CC did not have me on file yet but I discovered recall in the FMCA magazine. For my coach, received 6 new toyo tires installed at Les Schwab tire shop in my area at no charge. New sticker came in mail which I installed. Do not hesitate, call the service group at CC if your coach is involved. They handled this event very professionally.

1. The recall notice is from Country Coach. I am a second owner and received the notice OK.
Make sure you are registered with Country Coach if you are a second owner and that they have your correct mailing address.
2. I do not believe this recall has anything to do with floor plans.
The following is reprinted from the recall notice dated 28 August 2002
Models Affected:

"2. I do not believe this recall has anything to do with floor plans. "
It isn't the floor plan that is important. The galley slide is heavier on one side than the dinette slide and tends to load up its front tire more. At least that is my understanding that I got a couple years ago while at CC Junction City for other fixes.
If this is new info I should be notified by CC since I am the original owner and still in their computer. In any case, we will call them for clarification. Although, our VIN is not the same set of aphanumerics as you listed. It starts with 4U7B5DK....

It's been my experience that on prior recalls CC has had an extension set up through its service number (800.547.8015). Calling it and listening to the menu generally told you if your coach is part of a recall and what to do (regardless of the VIN, the production number of the coach is more precise).
If the extension isn't available for this recall then just call the 800 number and ask for information. No need spinning yourself into the ground over something that might not affect your particular rig at all. This sounds like a follow up on an older recall and I'd bet most of the involved coaches have already complied with it. Free tires also sounds like a great plus.
Happy travels

I have also received the first class notice and also the registered notice. Called CC the next day and received a call back from that my coach a '99 Allure has a recall on the six tires and said that they would send the tires to my house or any service facility. Then all that I would need to do is get them mounted and send the bill to them for re-imbursement. Dang---I put two Michelin tires on the front last summer because I was getting some real odd ball tire wear on the left front and right inside dual. I guess this was related to the recall but CC said that they would not cover my Michelin purchase but that I still could get the 6 tires---I guess I' ll have two spares. Will keep you posted.

I don't know about you but I think the new Michelin motorhome tires are a much better riding tire then the Toyo. Last summer CCI put two new Michelins on the front of our 2001 Magna as a test to see how they would wear. We had 15,000 miles on our Toyos and they were three quarters gone on the out side edge. We now have 14,000 miles on the Michelins and they are doing great. The thing we like the most is the ride. I am carring 115# of air in both front tires and the ride is much better then when we carried 108# in the Toyos and there is hardly no wear on the outside edge. CCI has been watching our tires and they are pleased with the result. I have also noticed that all the Prevosts now come with Michelins.
Good luck on your tire recall. You might want to consider putting on Smart Tire when the tires are being remounted. The system is great and you never need to worry about air pressure when your on the road. Getting this system put on when you do new tires saves most of the install price and the system is well worth the money.
If this is a big recall for new tires everyone should consider putting on Smart Tire when the new tires are put one.

Bill,
There are problems with the SmarTire system: It will only read 6 tires so if you're running a tag and/or pulling a toad, none of those tires are being monitored (they have promised an updated system to read more tires but have pushed back its release several times). Also, to retrofit the system on a coach requires dismounting/remounting and rebalancing after installing the sensors. This is costly and potentially harmful to the rim and tire during the dismount/remount. Lastly, their dash indicator, in my opinion, is garish and looks out of place.
Thanks in part to the Ford Explorer/Firestone tire fiasco there are a number of companies (Michelin and Continental included) coming on line with similar systems. They want to offer them to the motoring public and wind up with the systems as optional equipment for all vehicles. I was on the web and searched for "TPMS" and "Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems" - I got a lot of hits - there are a lot of systems in the works - some do not require breaking down the tire/wheel.

Hello Bill,
I put the Michelins on last summer because of the tire wear and have been very pleased with the Michelins. My coment "Dang" was mearly a dissappointment that CC will not re-imbursement on the Michelins. We have about 15,000 miles on the tires and no wear . Will keep you posted on the recall.

We do not have smart tire. I attended a seminar on smart tire while at the CC rally in July and came away convinced I would order it if ever we are able to purchase a new coach.
If all six tires were being replaced (at no cost) I would definitely take the opportunity to install smart tire at that time.
Concerning the six monitoring points. If I had a coach with a tag axle I would have the monitors placed on the front and duals. My assumption being that one of these tires running an incorrect temp/pressure would create a bigger hazard than that condition on a tag tire.
I would like to see a way of monitoring the TOAD tires as one worry is a flat that goes un noticed for several miles.
Would it be practical to have a four wheel monitor and display inside the TOAD with hard wired connections to a second (slave) display in the MH?

You are right about Smart Tire only reading 6 tires, but they are the most important tires so something is better then nothing. We have a tag axle and we still like out ST and if you are putting new tires on anyway what a great time to get some kind of system installed.

This is from FMCA site on recall notices, it appears that all the tires were installed prior to 2000 and anyone with a later model should not be involved, I have a 2000 and it has the larger tires on it. Prior to 2000 they were putting a smaller tire and I think those are the affected models:
Country Coach Inc. has announced recall 01V284 (NHTSA recall 01V284), which affects Gillig chassis with VIN (vehicle identification number) 46GED3K1050976 to 46GED2511V1043216 and Dynomax chassis with VIN 4U7C6E8FR10X1100508 to 4U7E9FR18Z110910. These chassis were used on 128 MH PD (diesel pusher) motorhomes between January 1990 and November 1992, 460 Magna motorhomes between July 1991 and September 1999, 52 Affinity motorhomes between February 1993 and September 1999, and 95 Concept motorhomes between March 1990 and June 2000.
On certain motorhome chassis, mathematical miscalculations resulted in erroneously assigned cold tire inflation pressures and axle weight ratings that are inadequate. As a consequence, these motorhomes have tire weight ratings that are less than the front or rear axle weight ratings (FAWR, RAWR) and in some instances have inadequate FAWR and/or RAWR. The FAWR and/or RAWR as stated on the federal tire label are inadequate for these motorhomes. Because of this, the tires selected for these motorhomes do not comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 120. In some cases, this could cause premature front tire tread wear or tire failure during normal driving. The premature tire tread wear or tire failure could lead to a loss of steering control and potentially result in a vehicle accident.
Dealers will remove and replace the front and/or rear tires to remedy the noncompliance. Federal tire labels will also be replaced. This work will be performed at no cost to the consumer. The repair will take approximately 5 hours (2 hours for front tires and/or 3 hours for rear tires).
For more information about this recall, contact Country Coach at (800) 452-8015. Country Coach began owner notification in September 2001.

I have 30,000 miles on my Toyo tires and they don't show a great deal of wear, maybe you had a inflation, balance or alignment problem.
Most people seem to get good service from the Toyo tires.

(I'm a couple of weeks behind on the group postings.... but fun comes first!)
I have the Smart Tire system on my coach.... but don't think I would get it again. As mentioned I am on my way to the factory at which time I will discuss the system to find out if I just don't understand it or maybe it doesn't work properly.
First, the max pressure it is designed to read is 127 psi. So if the front tires are set to 120 psi as per the manual and a few degrees of heat build up the pressure goes over the max capability. Second, the inside rears both give high temp alarms but the pressures are correct and in line with the outside tires. One would think that the pressures would build way up if the temp went up that high.
As I said.... it may be me but something isn't right. I'll know more after my visit with the creator.

Dick,
I have found the Smart Tire system to work great if programmed properly. The first thing you need to do is get the coach weighed, front to rear is ok but 4 point is prefered. Then you need to get a hold of Jon (or Rob) at Les Schwab 800-257-8430 and tell them what you have (02-40' Intrigue w/12R Toyos) and what it weighs. Once that is done they will put together a nice easy sheet to read which they will mail or fax to you. You will use this sheet to first let some air out of your overinflated tires (120 is to much for your coach with 12R tires) then re-program your Smart Tire so its syncronized with your tire pressure (which needs to be set cold).
Once this is done not only will your Smart Tire work properly, your coach will track and ride much better. Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
