Sofa in an Allure??

Yahoo Message Number: 50042
A few weeks ago someone was asking about the box that is located under the sofa on the Allure, maybe some of the others also. I was wondering if you found out how of if you can remove or rework the box. I would like to do something to the sofa in our Allure 470, it is not very comfortable, does anyone have any suggestions, would like to place recliners there..any ideas Marvin, 07 Allure 470 #31459

Marvin I just got through this whole deal on our coach. First I have a 2006 470 31432 and mine does not even have a box that covers the black pipe in that area. So about four weeks ago I sent an e-mail the Carrier to see if they were interested. I missed posted the e-mail and sent it to the group. Reposted same e-mail and sent it to Carrier no response. Then about three weeks ago I called Davis Cabinets. I did get a very good suggestion from Davis but could not talk to him about the modification, nor could I arrange any definitive time for the work. I called Scot and he did respond, and did give us a sketch, but by then our vacation plains were made. We also contacted Oregon Motor Coach, talked with Ed. My summary is the coach world has not come to the reality that things are changed, and that some people, (of which I am one) are watching there money. So we decided that the chair we wanted to go in place of the coach would fit under the table for travel. The chair had an option of an additional piece that when attached made into a desk. The chair was on sale, and came with an additional piece that was for snacks or drinks. We decided that the coach is really uncomfortable, but given the times we are letting the coach stay and adding this chair. Unfortunately we can not use the chair in travel mode, but for now it seemed a small sacrifice.
Davis does have pictures on a really great looking modification, his ballpark was 3K without the chair which is 1.5K. If you would like more details let me know I can fax you these pictures and give the you name of the chair, it is still on sale to the end of this month.

We have thought of doing the same with the chair, we have the recliner and desk now behind the driver but may add another one of those elkhorn recliners or what ever they are.. thanks for your input tho..

Marvin,

Don't know which sofa you have in your coach (seven numbers before mine), but we found it uncomfortable. It was because of the back cushions which only had batting in them. We replaced the internal batting with foam (with a thin batting wrap). Much better. You can sit up on the sofa.

Do you think that is the cause of the uncomfort, or do you have a different sofa?

That is our problem, the back pillows, we removed some of the batting but I think that made it worse, I had thought about putting a more solid foam in them but didn't know what kind of shape they would take on but I guess like you if I use enough of the batting it retain the shape maybe it will help... Thanks I will give it a try..

We replaced the back pillows on ours with a 3" foam mattress cut to size that the DW made a cover for...while it doesn't match exactly it has radically improved the quality of the seating.
If you go that route 2 things to keep in mind -- very sharp utility knife required and since the foam expands over 24 hrs or so you need to cut it to initial size and then wait, trim as required and then cover it.
Eventually we want to replace the couch with either a better one (no bed of any type needed) that has flip up foot rests or a couple of recliners.

Marv, we did basically the same thing Herb did, just adding more batting to the back cushions, but we also modified the seat cushions. Our sofa was too tall, so we took out the 4 inch foam and replaced it with 3 inch. We cut the 3 inch a little larger the the original 4 inch so as to take up any excess material and not have wrinkles. It worked great and we now have a usable sofa. Total cost about $40.00 if I remember right. Good luck.

Marvin,

We did not like the feel of our sofa either. We did the following - first I removed the hide-a-bed (Warning - the hide-a-bed is VERY heavy) and created a storage space with a hinged, full width plywood lid. We replaced the loss of sleeping capacity with blow-up mattresses that take only a fraction of the new space, and by the way are rarely used. The plywood lid results in a lower platform for the seat cushions. My seamstress wife then fluffed up the seat cushions by adding polyester fiber stuffing. She then replaced all the material in the seat backs with more polyester material. Thus, both the seat backs and seat cushions are much softer, fluffier and consequently very comfortable, particularly when accompanied with a glass of wine after hook-ups at days' end. We donated the hide-a-bed and took a tax deduction that probably offset the cost of polyester, hinges and plywood. The added storage space in the living area was a welcome benefit.

Good Luck,

Good Idea's on the Sofa thing, thanks for all the information, we don't use the hida bed that much, or never, so may go the route with the plywood and storage, I remember the old nail kegs at the hardware stores in the past, they sat better than the 100K sofa..

WE changed out both of our sofas. We originally had a full J on the driver's side and a modified on the passenger side. We had Villa (Mike) build us replacements. We combined several features and got a really custom look with a nice residential feel. We will be at the rally if you want to check it out
