Trip to Yellowstone

My wife and I will be traveling to Yellowstone from Red Lodge Montana after the Labor Day weekend. We have the choice to drive our coach or drive our toad, our choice will depend on the roads. Are the roads crummy with a lot of high mountain passes with sharp curves? Any suggestions, we are not familiar with this area? Also what would be a good destination in the park and route to take.

At that time of year the roads should be fine. I did it in early May last year with snow everywhere and had no problems. Plenty of hills and sharp turns but nothing your Inspire can't handle.
We stayed in the park at the Fishing Bridge Campground. Nothing fancy and some will say crowded but really convenient to touring the entire park.

Walt, we have ventured into Yellowstone from Red Lodge and traveled both Beartooth and Chief Joseph (when Beartooth was close). Both are doable with a coach though you won't see many sights because you'll be watching the curvy roads a lot.

On one trip we took the toad to Yellowstone on a day trip, via Chief Joseph and came back via Cody - long day. You didn't say how much time you had.

Be sure to go to the Pig Races and see the Smith mine.

Drove reverse route last year. Don't remember anything unusual except it was a very scenic drive

Frank and I have been to several parks in West Yellowstone, about 4 miles from the entrance to the park. We recommend the West Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park. Great park and you are within walking distance of the amenities (grocery, restaurants, and stores) in town. Some friends of ours stayed there last year and highly recommend it as well. Check out the web site to see the park. We enjoyed the drive down from Montana. Very scenic and not a bad drive at all. Typically the roads in the national parks are narrow and congested with tourists. Driving your toad in the park will be much more enjoyable than the big motorhome.

Hi Lee Z,

The 14 mile drive from Madison to Norris is closed for repairs till next spring starting Aug 17th. Most all the campgrounds in Yellowstone that can accomodate a 40 ft plus coach are full for the next few weeks. www.yellowstonenationalpark.com for further information.

If you come out the East gate and head to Cody WY. There is several parks there for you to stay. Upon leaving take hwy 120 north, it changes to 72 in MT. When you get to hwy 308 turn left and Red Lodge is your next stop. The roads are good and the traffic is minimal. We went that way to a rondevous a couple of years ago and had a ball.

I currently work as a ranger in Yellowstone and have for quite a few summers. This year, not only is the road beween Madison to Norris scheduled to be closed August 17, it will likely be closed part of next season as well.
The trip from Red Lodge over Beartooth has a couple sections under construction making for delays at the very least. South to Grand Teton and Jackson, one will find about eight miles of rough, dusty going, starting a bit beyond Flagg Ranch and extending to Lizard Creek CG through the JDR Parkway. Other road work is scheduled elsewhere in Grand Teton.
Bottom line, coach travel isn't as good as it could be due to the roads; not bad enough to leave the coach at home but a few places that will deffinitely re-arrange cupboards.
Another factor has been the huge crowds this summer.....record breaking with massive traffic jams, especially on the West Yellowstone entrance road to Madison, simply due to the huge volumns of vehicles entering.

Things should quiet down somewhat in the next couple weeks.

OK Al, thanks for the directions. Cody and Red Lodge are on our "To Do" list. I have my Harley with me and weather permitting I want to ride the loop from Cody (or Red Lodge) on the Beartooth Highway, through the Park and return on the Chief Joseph Highway.
