Fuel Gauge Needle Erratic

Fuel Gauge Needle Erratic Until this morning all was OK. When I started up today the fuel gauge needle beganjumping between7/8 andbeyond Full. The actual tank level should have been reading a steady 7/8.What would cause it to suddenly begin to jump around?Bad ground? Where to check? Bad sender? How to check? Bad gauge? How to check? Thanks, Steve

That sounds like a sender, my acted similarly when the sender unit failed. Fairly easy to replace, CC shipped mine to me and I replaced it without difficulty. Took me about an hour or less to pull the old unit and install the replacement sender.

Access is is located on top of the fuel tank, open the compartment containing the propane tank and you look inside over the top of the propane tank and you should be able to see it. Mine has a disc like panel with screws, can't remember exact number of screws, maybe 5 or so, you remove those screws and the sender arm is attached. you work the sender out and reverse to reinstall. Not a difficult job. Mine is a 2000 Intrigue so yours should be similar.

Re: Fuel Gauge Needle Erratic I guess that CCmade some changes between 2000 and 2002. I can peek inabove the propane tank and see wires and the disk like panel you speak ofon top of the fuel tankbut the access space is too thin toeven squeeze my flattened hand. I doubt whetherIcan get any kind of a tool in there and even ifI do, it would be impossible toremove the sending unit. My best hope is that the problem will go away as mysteriously as it came. Yea! Lots of luck with that!! Steve - 2002 Intrigue

Steve,

Sorry to hear that, mine had very little space but using an offset I was able to get the screws out and had just enough clearance to pull the sender out, sounds like they changed something on the 02 that makes that not possible. Maybe there are others in the group who have faced the issue and solved it on 02 coach.

Good Luck.

Hi Steve,

From your description, you might have a Centroid sending unit. www.centroidproducts.com If so, several things can cause the erratic reading. Water in the fuel tank, bad or floating ground wire attached to the round top of the sender, dirt and dust accumulating on top of the round unit, and the new ULSD fuel. Centroid has had some problems on the older units with the ULSD's additives that interfere with the tube that goes down into the fuel tank that is attached to the round hockey puck looking unit. The tube is a tube within a tube that provides a capacitance reading of the fuel level between the two tubes. Visit their web site for additional information.

Re: Fuel Gauge Needle Erratic Thanks guys for your replies and suggestions. I apparently have my homework cut out for me.
Don -I haven't seen any access panels in my forward bay but I'll offload some stuff and take a closer look. By"forward bay" I'm assuming you're talking about the pass-through behind the propane on the right and generator on the left.
Chuck - I couldn't find anything on the centroidproducts.com website that referred to ULSD fuel. And if thenewfuel is causing the problem, what's thefix? By the way, my2002Intrigue is the 36-foot model if that makes any difference.

I don't know exactly when CC started doing this but my fuel tank my 2004 Allure is in front of the first bay. I have a pullout tray and with it out I found 3 access panels in the front wall of the bay that when removed gave me total access to the entire top of the fuel tank with all kinds of room. I did have both a 2002 and 2003 Allure but only remember that the fill pipes were in the same position as my 2004. That of course doesn't mean that the fuel tank is but it must be pretty close.
