Does the diesel side of the HydroHot fire? I suspect that it does not.
If not then you may have a failed coil which provides the spark for diesel function. If this is the case then you must turn on the electric side or you risk a frozen HH. If you don't have 30 or 50 amp service you will have to run your generator.
In summary, you should turn on the electric side of the HH. Set the thermostat to heat pump for heating.
