10 Days in Colorado - 5 Things We Shouldn't Miss

We are planning a 12 day roundtrip from our home near Phoenix up into Colorado in three weeks, but are not totally sure what to do when we get there. We know we want to stop in Aspen. But beyond that, great scenery and cool places/routes that keep us in the mountains (away from Denver, Colo Spgs, etc.) is our objective.
A great loop hitting the best during the limited time we have would be ideal. 150 - 200 miles is the most we would want to travel in a given day except the first and last getting to and from Colorado.
I would love to get some suggestions of either places you would recommend we not miss, or highways that have knocked you out. We will be towing a Jeep Wrangle behind our 34' Allure, so being short and agile, that makes steep and twisties welcome for the right reward.

I prefer Salida, but Buena Vista is a nice central location to explore from Poncha Springs to Leadville and the Arkansas River valley. You can run over to Canyon City to either ride the train or raft down the river

and see the bridge to Nowhere and the Canyon. You shouldn't miss Ouray, Silverton and of course

Durango. You can hike, explore the mountains by Jeep, fly gliders, Ride the Durango Silverton RR via

Narrow Guage steam train up the canyons to Silverton. Play golf on numerous courses. Eat barbeque

and be entertained by the Bar-D Wranglers. Eat at fine restaurants in Durango, Go horse back riding,

take helicopter rides, visit the Indian ruins at Mesa Verde, Go Mine exploring and pan for gold . There is great shopping for the ladies in Durango, local theatrical groups, The Strater and the Palace restaurants.
The Train and the roundhouse museum. Great weather this time of the year, with an afternoon

thunderstorm every once in a while to keep the temps down. Get reservations!!!

If I where you I would make Reservations at Tiger Run resort in Breckinridge for a few nights ASAP after you leave Aspen.
You really should hit Rocky Mountain national park and the town of Estes Park, Elk mountain camp ground is just OK.
If your coming into Denver, Chatfield reservoir on the south side of town really does have a good camp ground. On the west side their is a tiny camp ground hidden in Golden next to the river but is very hard to get into and a few blocks from the Coors Plant.
On the other side of the Divide from Rocky Mountain Nation Park is Granby and Shadow mountain lakes and thier is always Steamboat Springs and the Yampa River.

A favorite of mine is Creede. A really nice RV park there and great jumping off point for some high mountain touring. North from Creede to Gunnison is a great drive. You will go over Slumgullion pass, Spring Creek pass and Lake City pass. Spend some time in Lake City. There is a turn off to a waterfall north of Creede. There is no indication that you can get in and out with a coach but you can. A nice stop. In Gunnison you must visit the Black Canyon of the Gunnison---awesome. Try to visit both side of the canyon and take a boat tour in the bottom of the canyon. A great fishing lake at Gunnison and the Gunnison River is good fishing also. From there visit Crested Butte. Have a blast--I'm jealous.

I second the motion that you be sure to see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison and the Crested Butte area...
Also, do the 3 day white-water rafting trip down the Arkansas river. The guides set up camp for you each nite and cook gormet meals. You will get wet, the water is cold, but it is a trip to remember.

we loved Estes Park and Pikes Peak. Also Boulder is beautiful. Lots of walking trails beside rushing creeks. Enjoy!
