heated tile floor

Yahoo Message Number: 63234
I have a 2007 allure with living room & bath room heated tile floors!
Heated floors in the living room work perfect! The floor area in the galley & Bath are NOT working at all! They worked when the rig was new but NOT now! I have reset the breakers in the box. The Gold Heat thermostat do not show any faults and look like they are heating...Does any one know of any other fuses to look at?

Lonnie, by 'breakers in the box' do you mean 2 GFI switches in the hall panel, which is my set-up? You may also have two rectangular panels next to the floor of the hall panel, below the GFIs. You should check the breakers in there too.

Lonnie Don't know what floor heat you have and don't say whether you have 1 or 2 thermostats. Mine has 2 thermostats and the product is Gold Heat. If, like mine, the thermostats are line voltage ( 120 V ) and are controlled by a sensor in the floor. If the setting being asked to meet is say 80 and the floor is 70, the thermostat should be asking for the floor to be heating , so that the output to the floor should be passing the 120 V through to the floor. You will have to pull the Stat and check for power going to the floor. If power is going to the floor but you have no heat, then there probably is a break in the wire , in the floor some where. You can check this by measuring continuity in the circuit. If an open circuit exists , you will not have continuity ( and therefore no heat ). This is not repairable since you would have to tear the floor up. It is possible the break is between the Thermostat and where the wire goes into the floor, but that is not easy and usually not likely. The sensor is embedded in the floor, with the grout , usually near , where the wire goes into the floor. You can tell if it is the sensor, by measuring the sensor resistance. You will have to get hold of Gold Heat to get that number. If it is the sensor , you typically would not have voltage leaving the Stat. As well , you could have a bad Thermostat. If that is the possibility, the easiest way to check that is to exchange the thermostats ( I presume you have 2 stats , as you don't say ) I would leave the sensor attached to it ( which is the other part of the floor that works ), that way know you have a working sensor. If the floor heat starts to work, then you know it is not the sensor, and therefore is is a bad stat. Then move the sensor from the non working floor and connect it to , the now working floor ) If it doesn't continue to heat the floor it is the sensor. The sensor problem is also somewhat hard to change , as you have to cut the grout out until you get to the sensor. I hope I haven't complicated it too much, but it really is pretty logical. I suspect if you call Gold Heat , they will tell you the same thing.

When ours stopped heating there was a very slight burnt odor only noticable right next to the thermostat. Taking the thermostat out and found that we had burnt wires. Thermostat was reading OK and no breakers ahd opened.
Appears that the wire nuts proabbly loosened and caused the wires to overheat to the point where they woudl not carry any current -- don't know exactly where the problem lies. Also, the back of the thermostat was slightly melted.
I've ordered a new thermostat and when back in the Eugene area next month or so will have a tech check and replace the wiring to/from the thermostat and floor. In the interim I have the breaker off and the wires in question have been cut and capped.
