Power Tech Generator

I have an issue that ties to the 120v/240v discussion. I don't want to reopen the discussion with this request. My 7000 watt Power Tech generator is wired for two separate 120v outputs. If I change the polarity of one of the output winding I can get 240v. I've discussed this with Power Tech and they see no problem with the control circuit (or other problems) in doing this. In fact they have a 240v version that is wired this way. Now the question. Has anyone done this?

I have the same Power Tech 7 kw. Why? If you look at your Man. that came with the package yes you have two 120v Stator Winding Coils as I call them in the trade. Yes you can rewire for 240 volts but you will get half the currant at 240v line to line but 120v line to Neutral! In other words you have two 25 amp 120 volt coils but you rewire them in SERIES you will only get 25 amps at 240 volts as long as you get the right coil polarity. Im Just wondering Remember you Coach transfer sw is 120/240 on shore side but the generator side is 120volts with 50 AMP OUTPUT FROM THE GENERATOR! Wish I were there to walk you through this! Funny I used to get paid for this I love Diesel and Generator Q&A! It keeps the gray matter warm! Ken Retired Power Stytems Tech. 99 Allure 30356 I really think your testing Me? Had to run the generator a few times this past summer to rum the AC's. The gen developed a small fuel leak that I was not able to address as we boondock most of the time. Am now at a friends house in the Foothills east of Yuma, so yesterday got tools out and went to work. Was finally able to get the many screws out that hold the metal cover on. Got the engine exposed enough to investigate the problem. Started the generator and found the leak was in the return line. The hose is 4 inches long, 3/8 diamater with 3/16 opening. The hose had a break in it just ahead of the clamp. Not going to be a fun job putting a new one in. Not much working room. Will report back when finished.

The fuel return line in the generator has now been replaced. The hose and clamps that small took a little searching. The space to work in is very tight. Orginal hose was 4 inches, shortened it to 3 1/2 inches and it was a better fit. Started the engine and no leaking-time will tell. Will be geochching most of today out on the bombing range, so may not get the cover back on until tomorrow. Not looking forward to that part of the project.

Bill,

I had the same problem fixed at a gen shop. Only problem was the guy use vacuum hose not a diesel rated hose, lasted 2 days. They were very embarrassed!
