Question please from a Newbie

Hi there

I have been parked in Newport Beach for 4 weeks so decided to run my engine and generator just now -- why would my t.v. turn on and off as I turned the generator on and off? If I am hooked to shore power, why did that happen? thank u so much

Hi Jan,

It is normal for this to happen on our coach as the system switches from generator to shorepower. I think when the generator shuts off the tv runs off the house batteries through the inverter for a short time while the system switches over to shorepower.

Jan,

When you are plugged into shore power the transfer switch gives priority to the generator as the preferred supply. When the switch throws over from the shore power to the generator there is a very brief interruption in ac power and another one when the generator shuts down and the coach returns to shore power. This is to prevent the generator from back feeding into the shore system and code requires a positive disconnection. In other word the generator and the shore power can not both feed the coach at the same time.
Electronic equipment is sensitive to this brief interruption to varying degrees. Often having the inverter on when you are on shore power will eliminate some of this.

Hi, It's always hard to diagnose problems from a disance, but your TV shoud turn off whenever the road engine is running. I wonder what your sequence was with the generator. With the road engine shut down, your TV should work on shore power when the generator is not running, and shift over to the generator when it is running. Hope this helps. CherokeeJim

Jan,

You will all kinds of opinions on both of these questions. We are a full timer for 10 years and I do not like tinkering and fine tuning so I have an admittedly liberal approach to the coach. I never shut my inverter off unless there is a troubleshooting reason. I also do not mess with the chassis batteries when parked except to check the water level. My coach has a lead acid 8d chassis battery and 2 AGM sealed coach batteries. I do exercise the generator every couple of months and usually check the tire pressures a couple of times a year. I do have a local truck shop near my spot in NH and they service my coach every fall and let me know if they see anything suspicious. They are very good.
Understand that I am not making a recommendation about this. It is simply what I do. Others feel differently and their points are just as valid.

Hi Don

thanks so much for your help.

I wont be on the east coast this summer, but next summer I will. I am going to plan my trip, starting out in Newport Beach, CA and making my way thru Montana, Colorado, etc., and into the midwest to visit my sister in Chicago - then up to Door County, Wisc - then I will drive further south to North Carolina, etc., and then back to Calif for the winter.
Any hints/ideas/recommendations? I heard that its a good idea to stay off the Blue ridge parkway -- since I am brand new at this and am alone driving this coach I want to be safe. thanks again Don

Hi Jan, You will get many different recommendations, but for what it's worth, we are also motorcyclers and love the Blue idge Parkway. That being said, it is not where I'd liketo drive my coach. Be safe. Cherokee Jim

PS: We call Montana home, enjoy the west end!

Jan,

here is one piece of equipment you need for your trip. I have no $ interest in this and this recommendation is solely for taking the stress out of getting to your next RV park and then NO surprises when you arrive. After you use the coupons included the book near free.
I don't leave home without it. Truly the best reference for big rig travel..... IMO

Thanks Cherokee Jim -- I love riding on the back of a Harley and used to do it with a friend of mine, but not any more --- I miss it.

Hi Al

thanks so much for the great tip - I just ordered one!!! I need to be sure I have my fuel stops charted out on my trip. I am so fearful of running out of fuel in the middle of nowhere -- jan

Well here might be a good rule;

" at 1/4 tank start looking for fuel" another rule at truck stops is " don't take on fuel there if they are filling the underground tanks".
You'll see the fuel tankers with hoses attached to underground tanks.

Fuel in the morning ....you get more (the hot fuel issue)

Hi Jan,

Another book that I use alot is called the 'Next Exit'. It tells you what to expect at offramps on the major freeways and if the businesses can handle 'big rigs'. It also tells you where the next diesel stop is and if you can get in with your coach. We always start looking when we have a 1/4 tank left. Then I look in that book to see how far to the next fuel.
Way to go girl!! Proud of you.

Hi Jan,

A little nervous is OK - keeps the adrenaline up. You may be very comfortable with driving your rig, but I would like to share one thing that helped me a lot when I moved from a 32' gasser to a 40' diesel pusher: When making a turn, wait until the front wheels have completely passed any 'interference points (curbs, poles, ditches, holes, etc.)' - then you can crank the wheel like crazy - the rear wheels will also clear the obstacle. If you are towing, you want to wait a little longer before cranking the wheel because the toad will tend to cut the corner but the rear coach wheels won't. This little tidbit has kept me from scuffing the tire sidewalls during a turn ever since I learned it.
I run a little more conservativley than a lot of the folks as far as fueling. Because of my wifes' medical issues, we usually run with the generator on so I can run the roof air to keep the coach good and cool. So, I generally start looking for fuel when the needle passes the halfway mark. This way, if it is late and fueling points start to get scarce, I can always tie up for the night at a rest stop or Walmart with the assurance that I have plenty of fuel to stay cool through the night and still have plenty of run time to get fuel in the morning. To me, not much raises the pucker factor like seeing the service stations with the lights all turned out and seeing the fuel gauge between the E and 1/4 mark.

Regards,

John and Linda

Hi John

I see u have the same coach I do.....I just got mine 3 months ago and it was in pristeen condition - only 11K miles on it and still smelled new. I LOVE it. The former owner added all of the possible upgrades imagineable -- and I fell in love with it the moment I stepped aboard for the first time and I had probably looked at 50 coaches.
I, too, tend to want to fill up at the half way mark, John. I am just too new and a bit anxious to wait more than that. I am not quite sure about your explanation concerning the tow vehicle. I just now realized thats what they call the toad. Duhh.... I just got that... I am towing a Jeep Grand Cherokee. I had all of the necessary tow accommodations added - the transmission pump or whatever they call it - all I know is it cost me $800.
I have not towed my car yet, but I am going to the place they installed it next week to have them go over everything with me and then I will tow my Jeep back to the park with me.
If u want to, email me off group - save the group from having to read all this extra (dressrider2000@...) thanks so much for being willing to help me, John jan
