Inverter Burn - Up and Air Conditioner Failure

CC Owners,

First I want to thank all the CC folks for all your input regarding our Inverter Burn Up and Air Cond. Failure. Regarding the Air Conditioner, many of you indicated that the air conditioner function has nothing to do with the Inverter failure. You were correct. I had checked all my fuses and they looked fine. This was my error. After so many of you indicated it was a fuse issue, I went back and pulled all my inside the coach fuses and checked them with a simple checker. The energy management system fuse looked perfect, but when tested it was faulty. Therefore I replaced the fuse and had air conditioning.
The Inverter burning up was a little different situation. After resolving the issue I can now indicate that the problem started with the plug in unit at a campground. It was explained that the hook-up 50 amp had an open neutral. ( I do not understand the all the terminology, but basically the hook up created a surge that burned up the Inverter. The concern one would have is why the Surge Protector failed to shut down the electrical input before severe damage occurred. The surge protector we have in our coaches is one of the very best. I have contacted Surge Guard regarding the failure of their piece of equipment. I have not had any response from the company. I will let you know their response.
The good news is Xantrex Service Center in Texas is Field Tech. Services, Inc. The specialist Oman, with Xantrex Field Tech. set up a pick up of our Inverter with an Independent Mobile Co. to remove our burned Inverter, which was burned more than Oman had ever seen. Jay, the owner of the Mobile Service met us at the RV park we were staying. He removed the burned unit and the following day replaced it with a refurbished unit that has the same warranty as a new unit. ( One Year ) The unit cost was 650 dollars total and the removal and installation was 352 dollars. We selected the refurbished over the repair of our own because repair of ours and testing for 48 hours to validate the successful fixing took too long for us, because of our time table.
I could not not be more satisfied with the service of Mobile RV Service 1-281-564-6819 owner Jay, and the service of the Tech who is directly responsible to Xantrex, Field Tech Service 1-281-561-7149, Tech Oman.
I hope my error will help you not have the same problem I had. I am anxiously waiting for a response from Surge Guard.

Stan, my recommendations is that you buy a Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C and remove the Surge Guard product.

You'll be happy you made the investment.

Lee,

If I have to to protect the Electrical in the motorhome I will. I am first going to try and have the Surge Guard be responsible for the problem I had to deal with.

A wise first step. I was never happy with the Surge Guard, it caused me one electrical problem, which is too many. The Progressive EMS replaced it as soon as we got home. I couldn't be happier. Progressive also has A1 customer service.

I agree with lee. With a progressive this would not have happened.

Ken here, FYI I bought a Progressive 50amp Protector three yreas ago at a Escapees Rally, Our Boomer Club rated this with high marks, In Yuma I had the Bond or Ground Wire and the Nuetral open up! The Device Shut down the power and had a Electrician work on the as the Pedistal was Hot, He replaced Bonding wire and made a new Bond to our Copper grounding rod. Problem went away but the cycling of the Progressive Black box caused the CC Surge protectors to short out and tripped the CC Main breaker, I removed the CC Protector and have the Progressive unit at the Pedistal model. I prefer the pedistal model because workamping a few years ago our Campground had pedistal protectors SOB's catch on fire! Got so bad my Mgr. said no more protectors or Hughs Transformer's! The Campground only had 30 amp. Im happy with the unit. Our Prev. owner had a transfer Sw, Inverter and CC Surge protectors fail back in 07. You made a good choice. Ken 99 Allure 30356
