CAT vs Cummins

All,

Is there a valid, factual reason NOT to purchase a coach with a CAT engine? This is similar to Ford vs. Chevy, I know. Looking for input! Thanks in advance.

Reese,

I would say, if you like red better than yellow, don't buy the CAT.

pick the coach that has an engine with the highest torque rating option for that given year.

Don't know about the newer coaches, but the '99, 2000, 2001 CCs with the Cat engine came with the Allison Heavy Duty 4000 series transmission...

Cummins get's better milage for the same size engine, the difference goes away if you have a heavy foot

or if your engine is undersized for the chassis. Cat engines could not meet the over the road pollution

standards , so Cat has pulled out of the RV and Long haul trucking business. Most Cat service centers are not set up to handle RV's, as opposed to Cummins where RV service is common. The question then

becomes what happens 10 years from now? I know Cat has a great proven reputation for service long

after the sale. But Cummins is still a big player in the RV industry and is continuing to train their

people and make their facilities RV friendly. With Coach Care being practiced at Cummins other issues

besides engines can be taken care, too,. If you maintain your equipment and develop a good

relationship with your local dealer, you should be happy with either.
Cummins didn't make an engine that would match a C-13/12 in torque for the same year CC. Just as

Cat couldn't match a Cummins ISC 350. The ISX 650 and the Cat C-15 650 were pretty close, but

Cummins chose to detune their torque for the Allison 4000. Cat did so, too, both being limited to 1950

ft-lbs. The big Cat that cold be tuned to over 2100 ft lbs was for other units such as Newell with their

ZF 10 speed transmissions. So, if you want a Magna, Cat is the preferred choice, unless it has a

Cummins 600/650 in the last few years built. Intrigues Can have many choices from Cummins 300, to

ISc 350, ISL 400, 425, ISM 500, Cat C-12, 505 and Cat C-13 525. Allures are mostly Cummins, except

for a few Cat C-9 and an occasional ISM in the rear bath models. Inspires are mostly, Cat C-9 with a few

ISC 350 Cummins. I have a great Cummins dealer at home so I have a Cummins.

You read about more over heating issues on this site about CAT engines.
Whose fault, no matter, it's

just a fact. C-12's in Intrigues and Magna's seem to work fine. The C-13 in 05 Intrigues needed some

up dates with the cooling system. Not Cat engines fault. 05 Magnas and Affinities had issues with over

heating, and some say being under powered. It's all there for you to read.
OH! Cummins are quieter!

IMO, there is not a lot of difference between the Cummins and Cat Engines. I have had experience with the Cummins 325 HP ISC and a Cat 425 HP C-12 They are completely different animals so I can't compare them. I would think the important things are the coach's quality and floor plan. I believe most quality MHs will give adequate performance not matter the power train.
The Cummins engine was in a 36' coach and the Cat is in a 40 footer. At 60 MPH, on cruise, they both gave me about 7.5 mpg. I have recently dropped my speed to 55 MPH, with the Cat, and my milage has increased to 8.5 mpg. Although the jury is still out. Haven't driven enough miles to be certain about the 8.5 mpg with the Cat engine.

Friends Having worked for a Cat Dealer most of my other life, My 2 Cents, Behiend the scenes Both are great! Remember there are other Diesels out there Detroit etc. The Motorhome Mfgr. will get Volume Quotes on each brand Then purchase many engines at one time. Bottom Line. We had Endusers OEM Buyers purchase sometimes a hundred at a time. The more bought the cheaper! We call it iron in the Biz! Having worked on Detroit, Cummins and Cat Power systems I decided to work for Cat. At the time our Engine Div. Gave the best Factory Trainning! Most of your Larger Hospitals, Airports have Cat. Today although Cat is out of the picture for now on Over The Road Diesels they are a Global Player. I have an old Boss working for Mich. Cat. He is busyer now then ever. Cat is Big in Marine and Fixed power systems. Some of you out there belong to the Cat RV Group. My SOB Rver's that have Cat do. I get my Brain picked a lot but having a Cummins in our rig I choose not to Belong. Cummins is the Largest Small Diesel builder in the World! They are now Road Ready then ever! Green Diesels and I again Road tested annd road ready. My trucker friends prefer Cat with the Torque. Believe me it saddends me to see Cat out of the Picture at least for now. Cat is Global and working in Europe on On the road Projects we dont even know about. I get Info. first hand trust me. Cat always makes their money on earth Moving Eqpt. Always and forever! When I serviced many hospitals in Miami Florida I never had a no start and the hospital never lost back up power. I read Cummins in a big player on emissions and thats good for all of us. Cummins builds diesel engines only! Cat builds all type of power systems! As a Cummins owner now in the last three years of ownership on a 1999 diesel build I only had a Cracked Exhaust Manifold and the seal in the lift pump go bad, The coach has around 75k miles on it. As a one time installer I like the Way CC Installed the engine with oversized Cooling, Plumbing, Wiring etc. Your newer CC's with larger diesels like the c13/15 Some time worries me as a larger diesel in an eight foot wide house! Regardless of your engine always check for soot, Leaks, loose Exhaust Manifold bolts and cracks. I have had several Engine fires due to fluid lines cracking and spraying fluid on a hot engine. Again my 2cents. Ken 99 Allure 30356
