Need Tire help

Yahoo Message Number: 73198
I have a 2005 Allure Sunset Bay (37' with tag), #31240 that is now in need of a new set of tires due to age. We drive about 10,000 miles per year. The coach came with Toyo 12R22.5. WE live in central Florida and are having trouble finding 12Rs. Do not want to spring for the cost of Michelin. The dealer can get Bridgestone R250 in 12R. He also has a Continental HSR in an 11R.(can't get 12R). Would it be okay to drop to 11R or should I go with the Bridgestone R250? Dealer says that the 12Rs are scarce, and if I loose one, I could be stuck if in the boonies.
I tried the archive, but couldn't find anything. Thanks

Steve,

Where in Florida are you? 12Rs are a standard size and should be readily available.

At the suggestion of Pat at Pro Tires in Denton, TX (we live in FL), we purchased B. F. Goodrich (made by Michelin) 12R/22.5 ST230's "H Rated" about 18 months ago. Good value for the price. No wearing after lots of miles. No cupping like the Toyos. Pat has put tires on many Country Coaches and Prevost motor homes and is very knowledgable. We were in TX at the time and spoke to a few tire dealers before we made our decision.

I just purchased the same tire in Lake Mary in January of this year. Google the Toyo Logo for the tire store a chain with several stores in the Orlando area.

We went with the Mich 12R's. Our second choice were the BF Goodrich, and third were the Bridgestone.
We had a credit from the person we were buying the rig from, so much of our costs were offset bringing the Mich's into our buying range.
Good luck - and, be sure to specify that you want the tire supplier to provide you with 8 tires with no date over 6 months old. All 8 of our Mich's, were within a 12-14 week old window. If you make this a condition of purchase, they can 'pick' the dates when sending them in for install. If you don't, you usually get the oldest date in inventory - as they want to move them out...

Best of luck,
Smitty

I have the same 04 coach as you. Replaced the Toyos with a new set of Toyos in April 2010 due to age. The wear on my old Toyos was smooth and even. No cupping. So, there's some evidence that your cupping may not have been due to the tire brand.

We have dealt with Pat at Pro Tires in Denton, TX (balancing tires, alignments, and tire purchases). Outstanding, knowledgeable service with a lot of experience. If he suggests it, I would also go with it.
