99 Allure Dash Air not blowing colder air just Not so cold air.

Friends I know this has peen passed around the table before! Been off the road a couple on months and here in Florida its hot! The other day I put a Pound of Refg. charge in the system. Now the Larger Hose on the Compressor sweets now. Driving the rig at Idle is seems to be cooler and almost cold like before but highway speeds its not as cool. A fellow CC Owner Gene I think is having a Compressor replaced on his 00 Allure. Hoping tpo hear from him. When I get to our winter nest in Yuma later most likly will run by a A/C Shop. Im challenged on Dash A/C. Working for Cat we had our own trained A/C Techs so I never got up to speed. Anyho any thoughts would be helpful. Please feel free to e-mail me off line. Our 97 Magna takes 6 lbs. Might need to add more. If it was not putting out any cold air then it was most likely, empty. Seems most have small leaks and need recharged regularly.

Ken If the large hose (return line) is sweating it means refrigerant is boiling off in the line. This is an indication that there may be too much Freon in the system. While I have heard of people doing this on purpose I am not sure it is a good thing. Have you checked your pressures? Dave aka Billy Byte (trusty hound)

The suction line probably should be sweat. Without gages on the system It simply means that the suction line is cold enough to cause it to condensate. The problem is you can have a cold gas or a cold liquid causing the line to get that cold. You want the refrigerant to boil off in the line and become a gas as it leaves the evaporator and before it reaches the compressor, It's when you put too much refrigerant in the system that it can't boil off and you get a cold liquid sucked back to your compressor. That will kill your compressor. That's why you watch your superheat or subcool, depending on what kind of expansion valve your system uses, when your charging your system. A cold gas will also help cool your compressor and extend it's life. Whether or not the suction line should sweat depends on several variables such as humidity / ambient temperature / temperature inside the coach ect....

I am in a repair shop as we speak getting my dash a/c fixed. It is not blowing cold air. I thought it was just low on freon but he pulled out exactly 5 pounds which is what is supposed to be in the system. He believes the dryer is part of the problem (it's the original) as well as a bad expansion valve.

Your Tech must have seen some restriction in the system. I've seen many a filter dryers over 20 years old. One thing that makes them go bad is if you get moisture in the system. Thats one bad thing when many do it yourselfers add pound or two of refrigerant they fail to properly purge the charge line and get air and moisture in the system. I would pull a vacuum on the system first before I started replacing everything. A deep vacuum will cause the moisture to boil off. If you have moisture it can freeze in the expansion valve and make you think it's bad. Good Luck with your repairs.

Quick update, Were in Hot La. outside New Iberia! Driving on I-10 I had cooler A/C at 60 mph. Again they had a bridge Insp. On the long Bridge on I-10. Lots of Idleing! Blows really cold, So cold I turned down the fan speed to pos. 2 on the sw. After leaving the bridge and up to 60 mph again it blows cooler but not cold like at Idle. Thanks for all your imput. Im afraid at this point on adding more freon. When I get to Yuma in weeks to come will have a tech put gauges on it, have a Tech that did a friends SOB Repair. I know I have heard on our older coachs there are many small freon leaks. Will keep you posted in time. Ken 99 Allure 30356

He has already done the vacuum to pull moisture. After replacing the freon there was a neg.pressure (vacuum) on the low pressure side indicating a stuck expansion valve.

Ken,

just a guess but I'm sure there is a low pressure switch, probably 25 psi, and at idle the low side is staying above that. When the rpms go up the compressor will force more refrigerant on the high side and reducing the pressure on the low. The switch opens up the circuit to the clutch on the compressor and disengages it. When the pressure equalizes enough the switch will make and engage the compressor agian. When your idling the compressor runs 100 percent of the time and on the road it is cycling. Without having gages on hand you could raise the rpms up and see if the compressor clutch starts cycling. If so you are probably low on refrigerant.
