In April 2008 we took delivery of a new 2009, 36 ft. CC Inspire #52167. As we began to drive we noted it had a tendency to "wander" causing us to constantly correct the steering wheel.

I won't go into the details but here is what has happened:
After almost 4 years and 20,000+ miles ago, 3 front end alignments and a ride height adjustment, we still have the "wandering" problem. This summer we intend to visit the Junction City area in the hope of finding some former CC employee who can fix this problem.
It has been suggested that we visit the "new" Country Coach as they have all the original alignment equipment that was used on all CC's. My concern is: If that equipment was used on our coach and it "wanders", what more can the" new" CC do?
It is my understanding that our coach has a NuWay IFS but I don't have any paperwork to prove or disprove that.

Now for some questions:

#1. Has anyone ever had this problem? If so, who and how was it fixed?
#2. A friend told me about a "SteerSafe product that is supposed to prevent wandering and constant correction. Does anyone know about this product and how good/bad it is?
#3. In all the paperwork I have I can't find anything about the Ride Height adjustment. From what I have seen in recent e-mails there appears to be a valve. I sure would like some details about this.

Any in formation anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

First thing I would do next is weigh the coach at each corner. I would be curious to see if there is a side to side weight imbalance to be corrected. After correcting that, I would attempt to move as much weight forward as I can, without over loading the tires or front suspension. Question: Does the issue change when the fuel tank is full vs 1/2 full vs 1/4 full?
TWI 2004 Intrigue 11731. PS When I changed tires on my 36' Allure from Toyo to Continnentals the wandering decrease to almost nothing...

we bought our '04 Allure 33' motorhome in 2005 after someone else test drove it and didn't purchase it because of "wandering" - we bought it and took it to Tampa Spring and had them set the "toe in" which helped a great deal. Then we changed the Toyo tires to B F Goodrich tires. Pat at Pro Tire in Denton TX came out to our site, mounted and balanced the tires and did an alignment. He also checked the ride height. He had previously worked on Country Coaches and Prevost. We recently put new shocks on the front and noticed a huge improvement in ride.

Had a 04 36ft Inspire that wanderer, Kaiser in Eugene found the back axcel to be welded to the frame crooked! Rewelded and the coach drove like a dream.

I have a 2005 Inspire 36' with 4 slides and did have a wander issue when towing a Grand Cherokee but not when towing a horse trailer or driving solo.
The fix included the following:

  • Set front shocks to firm
  • Raised front ride height about an inch
  • Alignment. I don't think the factory set it correctly.
  • Changed front tires to 295's. Originals were Toyo 11R's and passenger tire wore on the outside edge so I replaced both front tires
  • Clamped the Roadmaster Sterling tow bar to the coach hitch so it would not shift from side to side in the receiver
  • Lubricated the vertical pin in the Sterling tow bar so it would swing freely side to side. Originally it was very hard to move but has lots of miles on it now and is very free.

Last Sept I put 4 new Michelin 295's on the rear and run them at 85 to 90 pounds with a much better ride. The rear Toyo's were worn down to the wear strips after about 40,000 miles.

Don't try the steer safe it is no help with steering except in the case of a blowout. It will put excessive pull on your kingpins, and cause premature wear.

I'm not sure who you had do the alignment on your coach but we had a similar issue until we had the coach aligned at Kaiser Brake & Alignment Inc., in Eugene. They did a four wheel alignment and found our rear axle was out of alignment which was also the cause of our tag tires wearing excessively. They also increased the toe-in slightly from CC specs. Now the coach stays straight with very little steering effort.

I think it's mostly in the alignment.
Last summer I bought a 2005 CC Inspire 36 ft. I had to constantly adjust the steering because the coach wanted to wander.
Last month I had new tires installed, it was time, I set my Koni shocks to a stiffer setting to keep the front end from porpoising, set my ride height to factory specs and the coach aligned by a truck shop.
Now it tracks perfectly. Although I did several things, the alignment made the biggest difference.
