Silverleaf VMS

Yahoo Message Number: 82701
We are at the rally in Charlotte and I spent some time with the Silverleaf rep.
My VMS works fine but I only get a reading of 55 on the oil pressure gauge. This is due to the fact that Cummins uses an oil sender that is merely an on/off switch as opposed to a pressure sensor.
The rep told me he has heard that there is a CAT sender that works on the Cummins engines.
Has anyone out there done this or at least heard about it? Any and all info will be appreciated.

George,

I think you have received some bad info. My Cummins oil pressure goes as low as 23 psi at idle hot and as high as 75 psi cold per the Silverleaf.
There could be another oil pressure sensor to start the charging of the house batteries which would be a simple on/off switch.

I am sitting tight waiting for the fix on this problem because my Silverleaf does the same thing. The analog guage on the dash does show what I believe is the correct oil pressure.

I should have said "my Silverleaf also only reads 0 or 55 psi for the oil pressure".

You might give Silverleaf a call. I'll bet there is a setting that is not correct so its not picking up the correct info.

Yes there are two switches, however, the one that goes to the module is an on/off (at least on my 350 Cummins). I've been told this by Silverleaf and my Cummins shop.

It depends on the engine set up. Some have pressure reading gauges and some have yes or no switches. If it has a switch it either shows 0 or 55. Again, it depends on the individual engine and the set up.

I might add this is for the engine ECM not the analog gauge in the dash. Separate sending unit for that gauge.

Norm,

Without a doubt, the '04 ISLs used a binary sensor for oil pressure Input to the ECU. Because the ECU receives only okay or not okay as data, it reports okay as 55 psi on the Silver leaf. The dash gauge uses a different sensor.
