battery charging

It appears that I have destroyed four three year old AGM house batteries by over charging. Can anyone tell me how to check my charging system? I have an 2002 all electric coach with two inverters and four 8D batteries.

What inverter chargers do you have? What is the recommended absorption and float voltages of the batteries, if they are Lifelines I have that somewhere. You will need to then uses a meter to check the voltages at the batteries when in both modes. I had a Xantrex Freedom 458 control board fail and it set the float voltage too high this may be your problem. If indeed it is overcharging and not heavy discharging?

The first owner of our coach added two 55W Solar Panels, thru a controler that has a bad reputaion. I have noticed that our chassis battery, non AGM, seems to spit out more vapors then I expected.
I suspect that the combination of the normal charging system and solar panels, are 'cooking' the battery too much and too long. The RC7 inside controls indicate the normal charging will jump to 'floating', so I assume that is working properly. I need to find, make, the time to actually measure the at battery cook rate, with full charge and solar panels kicking in at the same time on a sunny day. And also valiate the RC7 floating charging rate.

Roger,

Not sure if your talking about your inverter/charger voltage or engine alternator voltage. With the engine running on high idle, you should see around +/- 14.0 volts at the batteries. Your inverter chargers should be close to 14.3 bulk/absorption charge and 13.3 float.

What is the groups opinion of desulphation processes on AGM batteries? Have any of you experienced battery recovery or extended life after use of a desulphation conditioner?

Gerry, I have been running 8D Lifelines since January '04 and don't see any reason to do anything to them.

They provided me with instructions 4 years ago.

Brian,

Your statement is incorrect. AGMs respond to desulphation just as do wet cell batteries. In may I sold my '04 Allure with original Lifelines on which I had nearly constantly run a desulphator. They still performed as new. Lifeline has equalization recommendations in their owners manual.
