comm error on silver leaf

Yahoo Message Number: 84574
Heading to orange beach Alabama from Austin Texas and I noticed a comm failure to the generator on the silver leaf. Unable to start the generator from the silver leaf. Power cycled the unit, tripped the breakers on the onan generator and still comm failure. I also noticed no data from the fuel injector pressure as well.

Is there another reset option for the vms?

Mark, you can get a communication failure and the red light on the Silverleaf if the generator is balky and doesn't start after a couple of tries, so it sounds like there are possibly two issues. I suggest the following sequence.
  • Turn off the power to the House at the door for at least 30 seconds. Turn it back on and see if that resets the Silverleaf communications and no red light. In my coach that also sets the frig propane alarm to alarm so you may have to reset that (do an Off/On cycle on the alarm) . . . no big deal.
  • If the red light persists find the Silverleaf main module, in my coach it's in the second bay on the road side. Pull the 'Main' plug for at least 30 seconds.
  • Hopefully one of the above will reset the communication function. If the red light persists, then do both of the above again.
  • Assuming the communication link is reset go to the generator. Turn the 'on/off' switch on. Hold the 'start switch' at off until the red code light is cleared. Press and hold the start switch on, for up to 20 seconds maximum overall, to give the generator a full chance to prime and start. Don't keep holding it 'on' once it starts. If it starts and then stalls off, try no more than two more start cycles.
  • If it starts right up, bravo, let it run for a half hour or more, add a load to give it a workout. Turn it off, let it rest for at least 3 minutes. Try starting it from the Silverleaf. If it starts and runs normally, your problems may be over.
  • If the generator won't start and run normally then you have a generator operation problem. Get back to us if that occurs.
Hope this helps.

Hi Lee

Thanks for the excellent information. I am looking for breakers at the door and not having any luck. Where are the main breakers for an 03 Magna resort?

We recently had a very similar problem which was caused by the memory in the silver leaf brain being corrupted. We replaced the brain with a new unit.
The brain for ours is behind the speedometer. If you pull that panel back you'll see something that looks like an ethernet switch. If the lights on that unit are red then there is a comm problem. You can try resetting it, but if resetting it doesn't fix the problem you may need a new unit.

Best of luck.

Main breakers on 2003 Magna Resort are in two locations. There are several in the service bay front wall. That is the last bay on passenger side. More up high facing you in the house battery bay. That is the fourth bay on the passenger side. They have to be pushed hard if they are open.

Good luck.

Hi George. We have an 03 like yours (coach nbr 6180). Both slides are electric. Sometimes they work, sometimes not. Have had them worked on several times to no avail. Have sent the main control box located at the left front wheel well back to HWH, have replaced HWH room extension keyed control and am still having problems. Have you experienced any issues with your slides?

Thanks,

Jerry McConnell
