Moto-Sat seems to be out of business

Dear Sir:

I have been a Dish customer for many years. My record will reflect that. I am no longer able to receive Dish service in my Country Coach. I used MotoSat for access. MotoSat has shut down its service and while so doing failed to notify its customers. I have a total of six Dish Receivers. Two of them in my coach and four at my place of residence.
The void will have to be filled by another company as there are many coaches facing this situation. Dish should be the one that fills the void. Most coach owners will seek to activate service as soon as practicable. Will you be able to resolve this problem, or do you suggest another company?
For you information MotoSat automatically located the signal and locked in on the satellite.

Dear Sir:

Am I missing something? Why do you need to change your carrier because your satellite system has failed? If your current satellite has quit working and you are unable to find parts or a tech who is familiar with that manufacture then it is simply time to upgrade to a current manufactures unit. I recommend either Winegard or RF Mogul for your choice. With either of these manufactures as well as any that currently manufacture portable and roof mounted satellite systems for mobile applications, you choose what carrier you are going with at the time of purchase. If it's time, go get a new sat.
I always refer to satellites as either lap top or cell phone. If you went and bought a new one of either of those, how long is your realistic expectation of how long the device will work for you? I believe the same holds pretty true with the satellites as well....

Robert,

I have what sounds like a similar system as you describe. I have Directv and have not had any problems. I don't think there is a problem with your MotoSat, I think it is just Dish.

Robert,

In November 2012, we changed our satellite tv service from DirecTv to DISH. We now receive DISH satellite programming with the same MotoSat roof dish and Nomad SD2 controller that we previously used for DirecTv. We are sitting in the coach now, watching our local Salt Lake City stations from DISH.
The technician from DISH purchased a different cross arm for the automatic MotoSat dish on the roof from MotoSat, and brought the proper LNB's for receiving the DISH signals to our coach when we switched providers. He did the conversion, including the reprogramming of the Nomad SD2, in about 1 1/2 hours and we were in business with DISH.

MotoSat was in business back in November.

They are not out of business.

The company name has changed ownership and they are now known as Mosat.

NOTE: This is not an !!! It's just info!
I'm getting ready to put a new sat system on my coach and have been looking into all the companies. I was actually in an email exchange with Mosat today.
The VP of sales, Shane Mallin, can be emailed at shane.mallin@... with any questions regarding the company and products and Dish vs Direct. I told him their website was flat awful and he agreed. He said they are working on getting a new one up and running. He provided me a long detailed reply telling me what's been going on with them over the past few months which explained a lot.
I have found out that asking about different sat systems, the more people you talk to, the more opinions you will get, and they vary widely .... kind of like the conversations regarding tires!

I emailed Cal Thorne, who installed many original satellite equipment in CC coach units, including mine, when he worked at Country Coach. He confirmed Bill's good report.

In part he said -

Yes Motosat is out of business. Supposedly they have opened up in a different name but its hard to get a hold of anyone. Rumor is that they're doing internet dish only no TV product. He did say there are other products available, such as RF Mogul.

The problem comes when you need a repair to your MotoSat and no one answers the phone. I just purchased the RF Mogul system which was built by the same people who started MotoSat before the company was sold.
So far so good. Have been to two RV shows in the last two weeks and there were no vendors selling MotoSat; but, several selling RF Mogul.

A heads up for people having problems with their MotoSat. I tried to sell my working MotoSat controller when I switch to RF Mogul and OMC showed me about 10 swapped out systems on his shelf. Matt who works with Davis Cabinets told me in Quartzsite that he had a pile of used MotoSat parts. I would think if you have confidence in the renamed company staying in business you could get a HD system on the cheap.

I had the same report from Cal. He told me the MotoSat brain, the Nomad, is junk and will quit, if it hasn't already done so. Makes me wonder why I bought one from him only 18 months ago for $2,500! Presumably, the current recommendation, the RF Mogul, is somehow better or more trustworthy?
What has been the experience of this group regarding the longevity of your MotoSat dishes. I'm not really inclined to spend another $2,200 against the possibility that my MotoSat will quit. But, I don't want to be out in the middle of nowhere with no capacity to get reception, either. Has anyone experienced premature failure (Cal says they may last a couple of years!)

The whole thing kind of pisses me off!

My Motosat was about 8 years old when the Cummins engine died, so I don't know how long it would have lasted.
I had switched to Hi Def TV so the Motosat dish I had was no longer viable, but it still worked.

We have had our motosat for four years now and is still going strong... I hope it lasts a good while longer as we don't want to have to replace it this soon.

I should have mentioned that my MotoSat is High Def and my service is DirecTV (much as I dislike them!).

Dave, to my knowledge we are talking two different components. The MotoSat is just a dish (luckily mine is an HD) to download the satellite signal. It is still useable if the Nomad (a signal processor) dies. If the Nomad fails you can replace it with the RF Mogul. Cal put these in for me in August, 2008 . . . still going strong.

I had my controller up dated at the FMCA Rally 3 years ago this coming Spring as I remember. Hope it works when I bring the unit out of storage in a few weeks.

I don't know about two different companies. When my Nomad failed, after much pushing back, MotoSat repaired the controller. The RFMogul uses the new DirectTV SWM1 technology. I had to buy the new Direct TV receiver for the controller to work with DirectTV. As I said before there seems to be a number of working Nomad Controllers on the techs shelf. I know Cal has mine and it was working when removed. I also did not want to get caught with a non working unit in a place where techs are not available.

I bet that Cal will be happy to sell you a RFMogul unit.
