Alternator ?

Yahoo Message Number: 87539
How do you tell if your alternator is starting to go south? I notice that if I turn on my lights, the warning light starts flickering on my battery meter on the dash. The batteries are charged, and it starts up no problem, but the light flickering bothers me. I wish there were some way of seeing how much amperage the alternator is putting out.

Al,

There are alternators and there are voltage regulators. You need to get a measurement of what voltage the alternator is putting out when the engine is running at a decent RPM. Should be 13.75 to 14.5 or so. Anything less and you should have it checked out! Could be your voltage regulator is going south, or your belt is slipping or your alternator is failing.

Most auto supply stores will check it for free.
