Coolant Boost pumps

Yahoo Message Number: 92260
Would someone please explain to me when the coolant boost pumps are suppose to run. I have the Webasto heating system. Do these 2 - 1"? boost pumps run only when the webasto floor heat is on, or do these pumps run all the time, as soon as the engine starts up? Are they used to help take the load off the CAT engine water pump to help circulate the coolant? I don't see that they are running or I don't see power at the pumps, so I'm considering changing both pumps since I'm changing my coolant, Thanks John

John:

These Boost Pumps run continuously when the ignition key is ON.

On my 2000 Magna I have 4 coolant booster pumps. There are 2 in the loop for the dash heater. One is located in the front of the engine compartment and the other is located in the front of the coach adjacent to the generator. These 2 pumps run when the key is turned on.
For the Webasto heating system there are 2 more booster pumps. One is located next to the Webasto burner in the rear of the coach and the other is in the center electrical bay in the front storage bay. These pumps run when the burner is running. They typically run longer then the burner runs.
These pumps have a tendency to leak over time. I have had 3 of the pumps leak. I was able to rebuilt one of the pump, but on the other pumps the coolant got in to the motor and ruined them. I replace the 2 pumps on the dash loop with "sealless" pumps that were magnetically coupled. No seals no leaks.

If you are loosing small amounts of engine coolant check these pump for leakage.

Frank,

Can you tell us the brand and model of the magnetic pumps you used?
