C-9 Cooling Question

Greetings!

A recent upgrade to VMSpc gives me a great insight into the details of engine performance, etc. One area is coolant temperature which is recently all over the place, after maintaining a steady 202-205 in the past. Now, in a span of less than 30 seconds I can have a swing of up to 80 degrees (331-151). It appears to me that the thermostat (now called a temperature regulator?) is failing and goes from full open to full closed rather than regulating. The temperature climbs at least into the 220's and rapidly falls to the 150's. The temp does not stay high enough, long enough to generate a derate. Of course, the OEM analog gauge does not reflect these swings.
(I do have a positive indication of proper fan controller operation, as it reacts to each rise above 208 degrees.)
Before I rip into the thermostat, could there be another reason for the temps to fluctuate this way? I have a new radiator (1 year) and the coolant (CAT ELC) was flushed in the process.
Also, does anyone know for sure what the coolant tank cap rating should be for the 2004 engine in the 2005 Inspire? (It is specified by Country Coach, not by CAT.) Mine is 16 psi but I cannot remember if it is the original.

Jay, My 05 Inspire had an original 16 psi cap on it when I bought the coach two years ago. I think 16 psi is what's spec'ed.

I have the SilverLeaf 330 and my coolant runs between 194* and 204* at 204* I can hear my fan come on and see the temps drop to 194*. I don't think you can have that kind of jumps in temps that quick so I thing there is something wrong with your VMS setup. I also have a new Copper & Steel Radiator with Cat ELC coolant installed by Quinn Cat in Calif and it has a 16lb cap.

Eight years is getting up there for a thermostat. Point to remember is that there are two thermostats in the C-9. One is commonly stocked the other is not. I bought both and carry them with me in the coach.

My Controller kicks in at 206-208 so at least that part of your silver leaf seems to be consistent. C-9s run hotter.

That is exactly how it should work. The drop is indeed quite fast. I doubt if anything is wrong with anything The range is also dead on. Don Seager former CC owner.

I had the same problem, changed the thermostat with no change. The problem was air in the system from changing coolant. I kept checking the tank for lose of coolant and I ran the engine with the cap off, eventually the air in the lines filled with coolant and the temp returned to normal 198 deg.
