Flat Tow a Dodge Diesel P/U

Searching for a new toad and would like to get an older (2001-3) Dodge Ram P/U 4x4 auto with manual transfer case diesel. Stopped by the Dodge dealer and they cannot give me an answer. The concern was the amount of weight on the front axle of the truck from the diesel and the ability to turn the front wheels without the power assisted steering (i.e. truck running). I have surfed a bit online and the concern is the towing capacity of the tow bar as well.

Any one with experience with this setup? or similar?

The only problems are; The additional 7K #'s and can you tow with 4 down or do you need a shaft disconnect, available from Remco.  A 10K # hitch is available from Roadmaster, Vancouver, WA. Roadmaster will install the Remco, hitch and brake setup.
 Roadmaster setup my 2004 F250SD, crew cab, short bed, Powerstroke, 4X4, 7K #'s, in 2005 with a Roadmaster hitch, Remco disconnect shaft and brake system, it has been towed 80K miles with no problems. Contact at Roadmaster is Jim, Eng.

With a 4WD Dodge you do not need a driveshaft disconnect. Put the transfer  case in neutral and the trans in park or if a manual in some gear it is all  good.

HI John,

Thanks for the info. I called Roadmaster and talked with the technical support and they said I can tow 4 down without adding a shaft disconnect. I also have a call into Dodge corporate and they are looking into it. I was amazed I actually spoke with a person at Dodge corporate.

You won't have a problem with the Dodge. On a Ford you have to turn the ignition key to the first notch to allow the wheels to turn freely. I don't know what the procedure is on the dodge. I strongly urge you to get a braking system. Coming down a Western mountain would not be fun without it. My Ford's brakes work off the coaches air brake system, check with Roadmaster.
