Changing Hydraulic Fluid and Filters

What do you all do about changing the fluid (ATF) when changing the filters on the main hydraulic reservoir (the one for the steering, cooling fan, etc.)? Do you suck out the fluid in the reservoir? Loosen one of those massive lines? I assume the fluid should be changed every 3 or 4 years.

I've pondered the same question. My owner's manual has conflicting info. In one place it says to only change the fluid if/when the system is repaired. In the maintenance schedule section, it instructs to change fluid every three years.

Mine has the big external filter which I changed when I got this coach in 2013. The mechanics at my local Cummins Coach Care shop where I get my service done said the fluid in the sight glass looked so clean they recommended leaving it alone.

I read somewhere that the best way to drain is to disconnect a hose at the steering gear.

Richard, I've changed my Hydraulic Oil one time in 140,000 miles, but have changed the Filters every 3 years. I highly recommend the oil be sucked out, don't fool with the large hose connections at bottom of reservoir you're just adding to the chance of a leak.

Most good shops or mobile service units have the ability to suck the oil out.

I replace the fluid every 3 years along with the filter.

But.....I only vacuum the reservoir of fluid rather than try to drain the entire system.

Half fresh is better than no fresh fluid......
