1998 intrigue - steps won't fully extend

Seasons greetings. New here and new to me 1998 cc intrigue 36ft...1st rv, too.

Have many questions and am feeling a bit needy at this point. For starters, as it just happened, the steps are only extending partially out...were lubed about 2 months ago at service center.

Have been upgrading all exterior lights to led; soon headlights too and feel silly asking, but how to access passenger side headlight - from underneath? Can they be removed from the front?

Welcome to the forum Pat, you will learn a lot here, I sure have... To access your headlights from the back, you can open the front generator compartment.  If your headlight lenses are just foggy, I would use a good lens restorer (Sylvania is great) to fix that. Seems to me, I remember reading about a problem with the steps similar to yours, but I can't recall solution. It was either mechanical binding or the motor, can't recall. Often with these steps, the wire connections (ground in particular) can be shaky, but usually that would be a complete on or off.  Perhaps a recent search will show it. With the TV and sound system, my advice would be to live with it awhile, see what works, what doesn't, and what you want to change. Where you sit in the coach and how you use everything will affect your plan too. With technology today, there is so much that can be upgraded easily, but it is best to integrate it all in one master plan. Satellite systems (switching technology) have completely changed recently, so you will want to handle that as well.

I saw that you said the steps had recently been lubed. Do you know what they lubed it with?? The folks at at Kwickee will tell you to never use WD40 to lube these steps but I can tell you from experience that WD40 works great on these steps. That being said, check to make sure there is nothing such as a step cover or a piece of brush hung up in under there then spray it good with WD40 .Run it in and out a few times. If it does not extend all the way, help it some .I'm betting that the step will start working!!

On your steps question.

I find it helpful to do a general web search for this kind of problem since it is likely not just a Country Coach type of problem.

"motorhome steps will not fully retract" gets lots of return hits.

The internet and you-tube.com can become a very good source for your problem solving in addition to brand specific forums like this one.

Good morning and thanks for your replies!

Type of lube - not sure - had the coach serviced at previous owners recommended shop which is s several hours away...learned to drive (home) in the rain at night and found the wipers kept blowing a fuse while on intermittent - was told wiper motor likely bad.

Anyway, re: headlights - thanks, yes, can access drivers side via compressor bay, but passenger side is baffling me...I'm not a jack up the rig diy kinda guy, but cosmetic simple stuff - sure. I think at this point I'm just trying to figure out how to replace if needed, and pass. side fog is out right now.

We completely replaced the CRT television and cabinetry upfront so we don't hit our heads on it every time we stood up. I'll try to post some before and after pictures on it.

Jesse - looks great! Did you do it yourself? I had to remove the original tv as we are in the rainy season here in Sacramento and found a drip coming from the tv area...so while at it removed the tv cabinet too, leaving a bit of a void obviously. Like the pup!

Yes, my father and I worked on that tv box for about two days. My father also owns a Country Coach, a 99 Allure and he did the same sort of design in his a few years back, slightly different however.
There is just enough useable wood from the TV box to round out the front end of the coach with the flat screen installed. Do you have the center or overhead driver tv box design? Figure out where that leak is coming from? CB antenna mount?

Nice job Jesse. Tv mount above driver (pardon the mess but a couple pictures attached); dicored a couple spots on roof last week - antennas etc but was cold here so not sure if good deal or not; removing wet insulation in that area today.

I am surprised that you had that much water intrusion from the antenna mounts . No cracks on the fiberglass? Seems like a very nice coach you picked up, I like your floors!

No cracks noticeable, but I might be missing the obvious- will keep you posted on that; and thanks - for the year etc it's pretty clean - 1 owner 34k and barn kept and gel coat stills shines; that said, few things need attention/updating...missing the upper weatherstripping on the bay doors along the entire passenger side hence getting some moisture issues down there ...think the rig had a couple bumps and work and they didn't replace the weatherstripping; has Bose surround and in motion sat but nothing is working ...lol yet!!

Country Coaches built in the mid ninety's to about 2003 were arguably the best quality coaches made. I obtained mine in Minnesota and thus had a lot, a lot, I mean a lot of rust on the underbelly effecting the steel tubing that gives support for the basement bays, battery compartment, propane bay and generator bay. It has taken some time, but I have completely replaced all the steel framework using galvanized steel to prevent it from rusting in the future. I replaced the weather stripping on the bottom bays when I reassembled them with the thickest stripping I could buy from the local hardware store, simply to see if it would hold up before buying the expensive stuff online. So far it has held just fine, but if I can get a deal on the right stuff I will buy it. Might take a look underneath if you haven't already to see if she has any rust on the exposed steel, very easy to fix if you catch it early enough!

Seen the movie "rv" with robin williams? Yeah, that's how I kinda feel...today, after dumping black/gray tanks (first time), filling propane, etc, took a curb too tight thereby ever so slightly bottoming enough to knock the genny exhaust pipe off the hangers...didn't notice til heard the clanging on the interstate... "holiday row-oh oh oooad". Couple coat hangers repurposed for the drive home.

Your knowledge and experience with country coach (and sounds like joy and passion!) is reassuring; again knowing nothing about rvs going into this, did my homework and many reviews paralleled yours - mid 90's - 2002 were high quality standards for cc, that coupled with a design I really liked, and a price point (now) that I could afford.

Think I found the source of one leak- antenna - but found the forward facing insulation wet too - small ...maybe 4 inch diameter - spot wet basically behind the entertainment/tv cabinet...thinking maybe clearance light leak or something; man, I'm happy I took out the tv otherwise might have gone unnoticed for some time.

If you can basically construct a new frame for your coach, then I should at least be able to find some weatherstripping for my bay doors then. Btw, quite familiar with the Minnesota salt/rust factor...don't miss the long winters but do miss the people - yah eh, I'm from up there Duluth originally eh. Smile.

Having a fresh full service (including "we lubed the steps") meant i wouldn't need to bother about them - the steps - for some time; fast forward 6 weeks and they stopped fully extending out, as mentioned, and it appears to me they were lubed with white lithium grease/lube. Per someone's recommendation here, thank you btw, i dowsed the tracks with wd40, and wala, i no longer have to tippy toe up the short steps as they are now working great!
