Advice needed on 1991 County Coach

Hello to all

I am in the process of trying to purchase a 1991 Country Coach 38 foot with no slideouts. It has a Cat 3208 engine with 4 speed Allison Transmisson. I have been RVing for over 20 years but have not experience with diesel pushers or cat engines. It seems to have been taken very good care of. It only has about 50k miles on the odometer and the generator only has 368 hours on it. I would appreciate any advice, suggestions and/or general comments good or bad about this coach.

The only thing I can tell you is to have someone look over the chassie and drive system before you buy. I don't like low mileage coachs. Some people think thats great but this coach has only been driven 4000 miles a year and that is not much. These machines are made to be driven and it would be nice to know if it had been taken out every month or two and driven. It would also be good to see the maintenance records to see if the oil and transmission oil were changed as per time intervals and not as per mileage. I would also be prepared to replace the tires if they are more then 5 years old. Check the dates on the tires. This coach has sat a lot and you don't know how the tires were taken care of. Tread wear is not the problem, UV rays are plus flat spots from sitting.
I was once at Lazy Days when they brought in a 1990 coach that had not been driven for 5 years. The new owner was having it checked out before he drove it. They actually brought it in on a low boy. I'm not saying this low mileage is bad but you should know why the mileage is low. Good luck

It seems that the parent or parents died two or three years ago and the kids are now wanting to sell. I have not actually seen the coach in person just pictures on the internet. I am certain the tires need replacing. The photos look very good. The odometer shows 48 thousand something, BUT the owner says the odometer broke a couple or three thousand miles ago.
So I don't really know the exact mileage. The deal sounds good enough that I must explore it more. I will need to find a service location in the Houston area and have it checked over before the deal goes down. You know what they say about something that sounds to good to be true. I would love to have a newer model but the ole budget thing keeps getting in my way.

A little word of caution on the purchasing of a used coach. You exact mileage on the odometer is a real big thing in the car business. Maybe not as critical in older used RV's, but if you are selling a used car with a broken or inoperable odometer, the value takes a serious plunge.

I agree with you on the odometer thing. I really don't care that much about the actual mileage if the coach looks as good in person as it does in the photos, but photos on the internet can be misleading. The coach is at a consignment dealer and they lower the price each month until it sells. I am hoping the broken odometer is what is scaring everyone off. The price is at about 1/2 of average retail or less now (46000.00). I am pretty sure it is a Affinity only because I have seen others that are listed as Affinity's that look just like this one. I guess I will only find out by going down and taking a personal look and a test drive.

I like that practice. I've been espousing the philosophy that, if you have anything for sale ... and it's not selling (assuming proper advertising) ... then the price is too high. This takes into account condition, time of year, economy, etc.

And people forget that, except for real estate and certain collectables, things (including motorhomes) are depreciating while they're for sale.
So the bottom line is that if something's not selling, keep reducing the price 'til it sells.

BTW ... last year, a friend called about a motorhome that was for sale for $179K. My friend didn't buy it 'cause the price was too high. He saw the same motorhome for sale 12 months later and the guy is still asking $179K for it. When my friend said that the price is still too high, the guy said that he's not gonna sell it unless he gets $179K for it. I hope he likes his motorhome, 'cause he's gonna own it a LONG time.
