alternators

Hi all, I have a question.... I have been having intermittent charging problems, and yesterday the 160 amp Leece-Neville alternator died completely.. it is my understanding thru the industry that they don't last very long... has anyone had this anomoly or replaced it with another brand and higher rating? thanx, Jim 10996

I had to have mine rebuilt. I think it cost me $150. I wouldn't replace it with something else as the tach is driven by the alternator.

First alternator did 6000 miles then died in 2 days. Prestolite 12 volt 165 amp.

thanx for the reply, nobody locally had a voltage regulator OR a complete alternator, so I had a new LN 160 amp overnighted last night from Atlanta warehouse, I installed it today, and all seems well... original one went 26,900 miles, I am going to have the original rebuilt as a spare.

I purchased my MH about 18 mos ago with 48K on it, and it was dead then. Not knowing it was dead (just thought the tach was bad), I drove from Michigan to California with no alternator and never charged the chassis battery. Ignorance was bliss. So, even though you may have a dead alternator doesn't mean that you are stranded on the shoulder.

The alt on my Suburban only lasted 45K so.....quality seems to be hit and miss anymore.

LN is a heavy duty product, so that is what I am sticking with.

In the 70's and 80's I was a National Fleet Engineer for Ford and Rockwell International. In those days the Leece-Neville alternator was considered the cream of the crop. If there were failures it was also extremely easy to replace components (with the proper tools). I can't speak for the 90's and later but on my '98 Intrigue I have never had a problem with the alternator.

I suggest you have a reputable truck repair facility check it out.
If the problem is intermittent it may be hard to find but I think you will find that it is likely one of the CC electrical systems the alternator feeds may be causing the problem.

thanx for the reply Joey. The voltage regulator crapped out, and it was intermittent before total DOA anyways. I got a smoking deal on a brand new 2824LC 160 amp for under $300, so I went that immediate route. The new one came set at 13.7 volts, and I turned it up to 14.2 before installing it, it now goes down the road at 13.75 at 1500 rpm with everything loaded against it. It will hold a 163 amp load, but mostly runs between 25-50 amp pull depending on what is turned on. Idle voltage, is now at 13.20 in gear, with EVERYTHING turned on I can find, where as before it was doing zero benefit and running off the battery. I did discover that the factory DATCON dash gauge reads about .5 - .7 volt low at any given time, as this was verified with a DVOM at the gauge terminals itself, so I ordered a new gauge from CCI yesterday.
