Checking front wheel bearing oil

Can someone tell me how to check the front wheel bearing oil. I assumed that it would be the same in my 2005 Intrigue LE as in my previous coach, a 1999 Allure. The Allure was simple. The problem in the Intrigue is that the housing around the sight glass is black and there is a black rubber plug(?) that covers up 95% of the sight glass. Even in bright sunlight I couldn't see the oil level in the sight glass so couldn't tell if it was okay or too low. I tried to use a flashlight to get more illumination, but that didn't really help either. On my Allure there wasn't any plug (if that's what it is) covering the clear center sight glass area. Everything's too dark for me to see anything clearly.

If I had to guess, I'd say that both driver's and passenger's side are low. Is the thing I am calling a plug, really a plug? What happens if I pull on it---does the plug come all of the way out and I lose all of the oil behind it? Is there a danger if I'm wrong about it being low and put more oil in and overfill it?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Brian,

I doubt yours is any different then mine. Pull the rubber plug and take a peek inside if you can't see through the site glass. You can just stick your finger in the hole and kind of gauge where the oil level is. When full, the oil will just barely cover the bottom of the site glass.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll try what you said. I guess it's a lot different than my Allure. On the Allure I was always advised to keep the sight glass half full. Even though the way my wheels are currently sitting, neither of the "minimum" oil marks is parallel to the ground, it appears that that "minimum" mark is likewise nearly halfway up the sight glass. That's why I was afraid to "pull the plug" for fear that oil would come pouring out. Why would they put the "minimum" mark so far up the sight glass if just barely covering the bottom of the sight glass is considered full?

Hi Brian,

As provided in a previous short thread - here is my procedure.
At every greasing (5000 miles), with the center plug removed, the oil is removed with a syringe. New oil (80w85w90) is added with a syringe until it is just about up to the circular opening - take time to do this as the oil 'wicks up' the curved side. Side note: it is very important that greasing is performed at 5000 miles or less (16 zerks front, 4 back w/o tag, amd 3 drive shaft - I use Havoline Crimson from NAPA where I also get the oil). Wipe all areas clean after greasing.
