Tire Monitoring system

Thought this would be of interest to the group. Last fall, we had a tire go flat on our toad while driving on the interstate. Other drivers alerted us to the problem and by the time we pulled over the tire had disintegrated and the rim was starting to go. Looking in the rearview monitor you could not tell there was any tire problem or feel any indication of a problem with the toad. This was very worrisome. A month or so later a friend was traveling down a highway and the tire went flat on his toad. Again, he could not tell there was any problem. By the time another traveler alerted him to the problem and he pulled over, his toad was on fire and was totally destroyed. Not a good thing. My solution to the problem was to purchase a Doran tire pressure monitoring system and install it on the toad. Since my 2004 Allure Smart tire system does not monitor the TAG axel, I purchased a 6 tire monitoring system and now have all tires monitored as I travel down the road. You can get up to a 16 tire system. Mounting the system is simple. Plug the monitor into the cigarette lighter socket, install monitoring caps on each wheel, go through a programming procedure, and you are ready to go. The system will alert you if the pressure drops 12% from the set pressure and alarm you if it drops 25% below the set pressure.
You can check each tires pressure at any time. My 6 tire system cost $490 from Doran (http://www.doranmfg.com/) . It may also be purchased from other suppliers on the internet. Terry Pierson 2004 Allure 31028

I have had the same experience a couple of years ago.
Admittedly, it was my own problem, as I had forgotten to set the ignition key in the proper position to unlock the steering wheel.
The tire blew after maybe 50 miles.
The fire was quickly extinghuished, but the wheel was 35% gone, almost down to the axel.

When I got a new Jeep, I did 2 things:
1) Bought the Pressue Pro system ($500, 10 tires).
2) Made the dealer disable the steering wheel lock [They really don't
like to do that, luckily they dislike losing a sale even more]

Did you first replace the rubber valve stems with steel stems to avoid problems caused by the senders' weight?

I checked with a PressurePro engineer to see if they have heard of any problems with rubber valves. The answer was no. They did indicate that they bend when the wheel is spinning (as one would expect).
When I replace the tires on the Jeep in the near future, I plan to replace the stems with metal ones (just in case).
