CTA8.3 Oil Leak

Yahoo Message Number: 16362
My 8.3L Cummins in my (old, but faithful) '95 Intrigue has developed an oil leak on the front of the engine beneath the harmonic balancer.
I am pretty sure that it is the timing gear cover that is leaking.
The balancer appears to be held on with 4 bolts. Is there anyone out there in "Country Coach Land" that can confirm that if I remove these 4 bolts that the balancer will come off and I can then remove the timing gear cover and replace the gasket????

Thanks.

Good luck Mike

MY 1995 Magna is in to Cummins for a oil leak on the lower front of the block.. Appears a bolt came out/broke or something, then cracked a bracket, etc. Going to cost about $600- $700 in parts and about 20 hours of labor ($3,200). You might have a front crank seal leak. As for the balancer, I think your going to need a puller. There are tapped hole in the balancer for this.
Cummins has a dye that they add to the oil to locate leaks. Might pay to take it to them to find the source, before tearing into it???

Dean, Mike;

Picked up the coach from Cummins last night. Coach has about 88,000 miles on it.
I asked the service manager about the balancer/ pulley on front of crank. Yes it will come off by removing the four bolts, may require a puller. Most the time it's not required.
Tunrs out the bracket that holds the air compressor up broke. This in turn cracked the casing behind the gear cover. Oil leaking out over the gear cover made it appear like it was a leaking front crank seal. $3k. NO more beer money.

Yeah! it hurts, but it was pouring oil out really really fast. The gear housing ( casting ) is made out of aluminum, so once the bracket broke it didn't take long for it to do in the casting.
I have a PowerMaster card, saved me about $300, 10% discount.
They have to tear off the front of the engine to get to the casting. Including the rocker cover.
Lots of seals, gaskets, bolts, washers, screws and pins are replaced. Housing was $210 and the gear cover is $61, etc. NO leaks now.

Sorry the beer money had to be invested there. I just finished my air throttle leak down fix. Shop said 17 hours invested charged me for 8 hours and a small brass fitting. This shop had never worked on an air throttle before.

Since you may have the air throttle also, remember that there are three air lines attached to the pedal. The third one goes to a manifold on top of the Allison transmission. That is where my leak was, a cracked fitting I guess. Starts fine now.

You may be able to fix it yourself if you encounter what appears to be a common Gillig problem.

I've got the air throttle. Reaching on top of a Allison has got to be a lot of fun.
I've also have a new waterheater door to paint. Two weeks ago we were on the east coast.
Door came off along one of those smoooooth interstates. $24. But no hinge pins.

GEEE Dean;

You had to pay $125 for paint and painting it??? I just made some two component urethane in the lab and painted it myself. Being a coatings chemist does has a few advantages. The roof I repainted last year is looking good. I'm still going to wax it once this year to protect the coating. Next project is replacing a couple of the exterior door lifts. Some of them are getting a little weak,( engine and water compartment). Also working on a road trip thru Nebraska, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, maybe Wyoming and places in between, in June.
By the way, I'm having problems with the water refill switch. The solonoid is ok. Checked with a 12v battery, kicks on and off. Replaced the relay switch in the overhead console. The only thing I can think of now is the switch itself???? Any ideas???
