Squeeky Outside Step

Hi All

I just cannot figure this one out. The top ourside step squeeks everytime someone steps on it. It is noisy and annoying. I have looked inside, outside, underneath, on top, you name it, and shot a ton of Silicone spray everywhere, but to no avail.
None of the bolts appear loose and the slideout mechanism appears to look ok. Any ideas?

I have had the same problem. The manual states that it should be lubed monthly with something like APS. Silicone and WD 40 should not be used since they attract dirt.
I get under the steps monthly and spray liberal amounts of APS, it seems to cure it until the next month.

Hello Tom,

You may have to go to a much heavier lubricant. I'm a cyclists and we have creaks and pops in bottom brackets (the area where the pedal crank attaches to the frame) of the bikes. The only way to stop it is to use a heavy grease. We use the LubriMatic White Lithium Grease. It's cleaner (it's white, for a while anyway) and this may solve your stress related squeak. The real problem is finding the exact area of the stress. LubriMatic White Lithium can be found at most automotive stores and probably Walmart also. Good luck.

I had the same problem and at the reunion in Georgia, one of the tech showed me two rubber grommet under the step that keep them from squeaking. He replaced both of mine and it is now like walking on cement.

In the way of a little more explanation, These are two bolts with rubber heads on them. After a year or so the rubber wears out and comes off, then the two steps rub together and squeak. I believe the bolts are 3/8 or 7/16. Just ask the parts department at CC, they will know what you need.

(the motor home steps extend out into the stairs with plenty of clearance)

Hi Tom,

Empty a can of wd 40 or better yet Ace hardware oil spray (cheaper and lasts longer) on the rails and 'call me in the morning'. It worked for me. Maybe, just maybe, a rail is bent.

I had the same problem on my 02 Magna, at the CC Rally in New Orleans last year, the CC techs, came and did a few things to it and it does not squeak any more.
Part of the process was realigning the entire step bracket system.

Forgot to mention the only way to get them out is to partially close the step by turn off the coach disconnect, while the step is in motion. This will allow you to have enough room to back the bolt out and then replace them.

My apologies, it's LPS not APS. I must have had (another?) senior moment.
LPS comes in a can similar to WD40, but it is sort of a turquoise and gray can.

we had the same problem and used a CRC product "White Lithium" it is water proof unlike WD 40.

Tom, I too have had the sqeaky step syndrome. After dumping gobs of Kwik-Lube to all of the areas I could see, it still did not solve the problem. Then all of a sudden I found the source of my problem.
Apparently, behind the skirt below the upper step there are bolts or something about 1" in from both sides of the step that were rubbing on the top of the lower step. I noticed the ridges where the bolts apparently were slightly dragging when the step went in and out, so, I squirted some Kwik-Lube under the skirt where I found the ridges and my problem appeared to go away. But, boy what a mystery..... Good Luck.

Tom for some reason my picture did not go thru the regular mail, I have uploaded the picture to the web site and is listed as rubber headed bolt. You can only see the back of the bolt and not the rubber head. You need to stop the steps in motion (and if you walk on them at that point you will hear no squeak) Leaving enough room to back the two bolt out. I'm sure you will find the rubber head is either warn thru or gone completely. I know CC has the replacement part, shipping will probably cost more than the part. The bolts look line 1/4. The rubber supports the bottom step while preventing a metal to metal rubbing everytime you step on them.

Tom, these are the same bolts that are supposed to be covered with rubber.
You could oil or grease them but I'm willing to best you would go thru more money on oil or grease in a year than it cost to replace the part.

Your right on target, the only way to stop the squeak is by replacing the rubber stops like you said. I carry an extra pair because they just don't last long. My 04 sheared the rubber off at less than 8000 miles. I usually take the plate off the bottom then I can lube everything and check out wiring and motor. CC will give these to anyone that needs them. Quickee should step up and solve this problem, my 02 did the same thing.
