Electrical Noise in Ham Radio

Was wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I hooked up my ham radio, picked up the power form the 12v chassis panel, and it works great when the ingnition is off. But turn the key on and the elcetrical noise makes it unusable. Tried a filter, no luck.
Any ideas on where to pick up a 12v positive lead that won't pick up interference when the ignition switch is turned on.

I picked up 12 volts for my Icom 706 MKIIG from the HWH pump in the driver's side electrical compartment. This lead stays hot at all times the main battery disconnects are on. I used the ground lug that is right there also. I used a drill to come up through the floor and routed the power lead into the coach. Just be careful where you drill as you don't want to hit the big bundle of wires! I do get a little "chirp, chirp" once in awhile on 2 meters. I just haven't tried to find the source. 440 is dead quiet, and HF works great when the bands cooperate.

I haven't hooked up the 706 yet but I get noise on my handheld on 2 meters occasionally. Have you tried a filter on the power leads? I'll bet the fuel pump is part of the culprit, they used to be nasty on diesel pickups.

Mike: I have been using a Icom 706 in my Intrigue for over 4 years. AS mentioned by Don, the power is from the Hydraulic pump power sourse.I installed an appropriate sized breaker to protect the wiring over to the radio where the radio's removable fuses are located.
I feed my 500 watt amp direct from the batteries however via 4 #4 wires running through the 1 1/2" steel tubes under the coach.
Admitedly, I never run mobile but the engine has been running at times with no noise interference. My radio is grounded at the closest point to the main steel frame rail which the batteries are also bonded to.

So there be no misunderstanding , the HF antenna is mounted on a tripod. It is a Ham Stick diapole at about 10'-0" Two meters is on the roof.

One more thing to try. Turn the radio on and start the engine. If the noise is still there, disconnect the antenna lead. If the noise goes away, the intereference is not from the power leads, it is a radiated noise and will be a real witch to track down in these computer laden coaches.
