Engine check conditions

Last April I encountered some strange problems with engine checks reported on my Silverleaf. I had not reported it on this forum because I wanted to make sure the problem was solved and I did not want to jinx things. Here is the story.

Heading eastbound highway 80 to Lake Tahoe, we encounter some high temp alerts and intermittent loss of all dash instruments.
Forunately, I had the silverleaf which was powered from the cigarette which provided me with speed, temp, RPM, etc. Got to our destination, where I found a blown fuse.

Returning to Roseville a few days later, we again encounter some intermittent high temps again. Pulled a fuse which then causes the fan to run at full speed, and temps, as would be expected, ran on the low side at 180 degrees. Replaced the fuse at another offramp, and temps were within the normal range 190-202. Got close to home, and also at home, had intermittent ECM Power Faults.

Got parts for replacing a couple of sensors associated with the fan controller, as it appears it might have been giving false readings and letting the temps climb. Did not replace however.

Someone suggested that it might be the chassis battery. Highway 80 has some very rough stretches, which apparently was causing intermittent shorts in a cell of the battery by crud sluffing between the plates. Low voltage can cause high current, which could have blown the fuse (with the help of the rough road). It could also cause the fan controller to appear to malfunction, and the ECM Power Faults.

Then I replaced battery (a week later - six months ago). Absolutely no problems since then. Temps run 190 - 202. No more engine faults, Knock on wood.....

This is the first time I've heard the term "crud sluffing." What does it mean, exactly?

We've never traveled in the direction you mentioned, but can it really be that bad? We're thinking of having the Silverleaf system installed to monitor engine and transmission parameters, but don't think we want to install it ourselves. We visited the Silverleaf facility in Auburn, Oregon and Dale, the owner, recommended a dash installation. I think Silverleaf would have given a more accurate report on engine performance than a CHECK ENGINE light. Basically, that tells me nothing.

Losing the dash instruments must have been very unnerving. We had Les Schwab in Junction City install AGM batteries in our coach (chassis and house), mostly because we don't want to be bothered with maintenance.
