Oil Pressure

Back in August I posted a message about our oil pressure being so much better after an oil change at the CAT dealer. I told ya'll I would keep you updated.
Well, we got it changed again today and I asked a few more questions. The service manager said that the CAT oil filter is constructed differently to keep the oil pressure up. He also said he recommended we change the oil, oil filter and fuel filters every 10k. He said the fuel injectors were sensitive to trash. Then to change the coolant filter every 20k.
Anyway, the oil pressure is still at least 20 psi at idle and we will definately stick to the CAT oil and filter even though it seems to cost quite a bit more.

Anyone have any thoughts or similar experience?

At this time oil level was in the low end of dipstick hatched area. I topped level to full, pressure was still 40PSI when hot. After subsequent 200 mile run, level has dropped back again to half hatch area.
At tickover pressure is over 25PSI. I have not had any oil or filter changes as yet.

Would ask other C. Coachers if this is really representative of other users experiences?.

My 04' Inspire with the 350 cummins always shows 90-100 on the gauge at start up and drops to 65 after about 5 minutes. It started doing this with about 6,000 miles we now have 14,000. Cumminms says it is fine, CC says that is normal. I thought it was strange because it just happened one day. I'll kep watching and checking pressure.

Sounds like you have the same sending unit I had on my ISC330. Same readings. They are wrong of course, read your manual, your lucky to have 30 lbs after the engine has a few miles on mit and is hot from running all day. TWI 98 Allure 30255, 2004 Intrigue 11731

I do not know if I have a problem and if I do is it a Cat issue or the non existent CC issue.
1.OIL PRESSURE ----- While driving the gauge would indicate just above 20 ---- while at idle less than 20
2.TAC READING ----- While driving the Tac can read 3500
RPM, and then drop to what would seem normal for that speed 2200 RPM, and then go off the scale beyond 4000 RPM. The engine sounds the same at 3500-4000 as it does when it drops to 2200 RPM.

2200 is not normal for a diesel.... 1400 to 1600 is normal for normal highway. You tach is not right. Depending on the model it may be a bad tach or a bad alternator.

The first recall on our '05 Inspire was for a wiring problem that caused this exact problem or inaccurate and inconsistent tach readings - all way above normal. Has it always been this way or did it just start doing this recently?

I have seen this on my Inspire on several occasions - usually after a lengthy run.
I have a Silverleaf connection on my laptop which will give me the "real" info.
Trust your ears - if it is over-revving, you will know.
These dash gauges are not to be trusted.

Then it probably is not the wiring problem. If there is anyone at home at CC tech support you shuld make sure this wiring change was made or that your coach is not affected. It required cutting a wire out of a bundle and capping the ends. Your number is newer than or so it may not appl. I may have the recall directions at home if it turns out you need to make the change. Since it was not a safety recall I am pretty sure CC would not fix it now for you.

Do I have a concern. I have been reading about all the oil pressure issues. I have a 2005 Inspire Cat. 9, the pressure when idle drops slightly below 20 and then goes up ever so slightly. Is this an Issue???

11. Will there be some kind of warning (check engine light) if oil pressure is too low?
In Medium Duty Engines ? the engines are self-protecting and will shut down if the oil pressure gets too low. The HEUI pump will not allow the engine to run without engine oil.

In Heavy Duty Engines ? there is an oil pressure sensor. As long as it is programmed, a warning light will be on and the engine will automatically go into a warning, de-rate, or shut down mode.

12. Does Caterpillar recommend scheduled oil sampling (SOS)?
Taking an oil sample at every oil change and sending it to your local Caterpillar dealer for analysis can help you monitor the health of your engine.
SOS sampling kits are available from your local Caterpillar dealer.

13. The oil pressure gauge fluctuates and sometimes reads really low during normal operation. Is there anything wrong with my engine? How can I fix this?
On Medium Duty Engines ? Caterpillar does not need to measure oil pressure.
The HEUI pump will not allow and engine to run without oil.

14. I am having a problem with my oil pressure gauge fluctuating or not being accurate. Do I have a bad gauge or bad oil sending unity?
The problem could definitely be either situation. It could be as simple as a loose wire, faulty sending unit or faulty gauge. Since the gauge is not a precision or calibrated gauge, we recommend you have the oil pressure checked at a local Cat or TEPS Dealer to be on the safe side. This will also help determine what the problem is or is not.

That fits our range too. At temp and at travel speeds, in the 50 psi range (pretty constant PSI at speed, can visualize the needle, but position, can't remember the exact guage reading - pretty sure it was at 50 psi range. Will correct if I'm off.)

We have a 02 Magna 6089. with a C-12 Cat. I purchsed preowned 01/02/04,16000mi, 16 mo.old, Indio CA. On my way to Yuma AZ oil pressure was 20lbs @ 1400rpm. I checked the silver leaf it confirmed 20lbs. my first run as new owner, when I made the first stop after 200 plus miles at idle the oil was 08lbs, my heart started pounding. I thought the worst. I took it to Imperal Cat. Yuma AZ, They ran all the diagnostics, checked all kind of stuff. After three plus hrs. they recieved data from CAT central, confirming even though oil pressure was at the low end of the envalope it was acceptable! Sence then I have put about 20000mi, three oil changes, oil perssure is a little higher, engine has run perrrrfict through lot's of steep grades etc. never used a drop oil, Water temp never close to a problem. It still makes me nervice but I just don't dwell on it. Good luck, and Merry Christmas, Rich
