Fan control (The Dust Storm)

For those who own Cummins powered coaches that may be curious about how the fan spead is controlled, please go to Google search and insert the following Sauer Danfoss 1090645 This will produce all the information you would ever want to know and a ghreat deal more. The first 9 pages tell how it works. page 15 shows the connectivity for my coach built late 1999 with a ISC 350 configuration. Pages 26 to 34 explane how it is programed, changed, and why it has to be replaced when it fails.

When the controller is unbolted from the solenoid it may be seen on the back side the programming window.
Now the $50.00 question is why do they fail. The high speed is a default position for a failed unit. That is smart. If an air sensor fails , yes it goes to high speed. The problem also causes the controller to fail after some unknown period of failed sensor failure.
The same company makes the sensors, assuming the CC folks use them.
Quoted price for a controller at Ft Myers was nominaly $425.00 Yes mine failed, but I am not certain when it happened.

Jim: I'm very interested in this subject but somewhat "challenged" when it comes to finding the specific data you are referring to. I found Sauer Danfoss site, but can't seem to get to that number you refer to.
Will you please enlighten me on how you found this specific topic on their site?

I assume that thisppliesto all cummins regardless of year that have hyd fan controls?

Googling the exact info he gave for dan Foss brought up the info.

The Cummins ECM has a fan control signal which is not used by CC, not sure if other coaches use it or not.

This is great stuff. Now I just need to find where it is located.....looks like another trip to the bedroom. I always noticed that when I use my exhaust brake, that it sounds like the cooling fan is also roaring. Now I understand how that is possible. I'd bet that the fan is turned on through one of the "aux inputs" when the exhaust brake is "engaged". Probably to make sure that the trans says cool. Neat.

Our coach may be different than yours being 4+years of construction design different. On most coaches that I have examined the controller is mounted on the rear end of the radiator housing. On mine there are 2 cables. One is 2 conductor and the other 6 conductor comming in.
From the referenced document and the drawings from CC date stamped 10/11/99 but printed date of 4/7/98 the connections are as follows: Two conductor cable, Ground and 12 volts (nominal battery voltage) Six conductor cable, a/b fan relay contacts [NC] (Air conditioner off) c/d Coolent temperature sensor

d/e Air intake temperature sensor (the one often talked about on this forum)

Out of the controller are 2 wires to the actual valve carring a varying value of power which sends a varying value of hydraulic pressure thru 2 small pipe lines to the pilot valve in the fan motor.
That changes the spead of the fan.
C/Dand E/F are varying values of resistance input to the controller were as A/b Is off/on. What I am assuming is this is a logic level switch.
I have a table of temperature vs resistance measurements that I will to verify the sensor activity. Simply turning the airconditioner off and on should confirm the other function.

Fan speads (RPM)

Low spead is supposed to be 0-500, middle spead is 800- 1300, and high spead is 2000+, and Fast engine (2100 RPM) is 2,600-3000 A strobe is needed to determine fan speed.

This info only applies to Cummins ISC with external fan controller If your controller has 1090645 on it , the above is applicable.

The ISL uses the ECM to manipulate the controller.
CAT owners have different but similar applications of the controller.

I will be making some tests as soon as the weather gets warm enough for me to tolorate the task under the coach
