Intermittent Air Conditioner

Our front AC unit has become erratically intermittent...on 2 occasions, after hooking up at a park, the front AC compressor would not start...only the fan. The rear unit works fine. We drop the temp and nothing happens. We switch to fan only and get air, albeit warm. The compressor did eventually start after about an hour.
Now, after running for 3 days, the compressor has suddenly stopped and we now have only the fan. It's been down for about 30 minutes with only the fan running, after switching the thermostat from Auto to Low.
I'm starting to think that the compressor is failing or the condenser used to start the AC is going bad.
Ideas? Getting a decent AC tech in Aransas Pass, Texas might be a challenge...

I have an 03 Allure wherein the Front Air did almost the same as yours. It turned out to be the Capacitor. If you remove the A/C cover and the the steel piece that covers the electrical components you'll see a large capacitor, its about 2"+ in diameter and about 4"+ inches long. Look at the Top of the capacitor and see if it is bulged out, if so its definetly bad.

I had this same problem on my 2003 Allure's front rooftop AC. I removed the AC cover and then removed the small metal cover located on the PAX side. With the AC on and fan-only running, I tapped on some relays and whatnot with a screwdriver and the compressor kick in and worked for two weeks until I got the parts from Dometic. I ended up changing the start capacitor p/n 3100236.235 ($12.19) and the PTCRelay, p/n 3100876.006 ($11.00). It took me about 30 minutes to change them out. Dometic parts department told me that both part should be changed as pairs. The start capacitor went back order, which is why it took two weeks to get the parts. They received 200 of them about three weeks ago. Dometic phone # is 574 294-2511.

Ok, changed the capacitor and relay without issue. It's been about an hour and the AC is still acting strange. It came on after about 15 minutes, ran for 10 or so, cycled off. Started again about 5 minutes later and ran for 30 seconds and shut down. That was about 30 minutes ago and it hasn't started again. I have the thermo set on 68f so it sure should be on and cold...NOT...Methinks it might be the circuit board?

Ideas?

The only thing I can think of is to recheck all the wire connections in the area where you changed the capacitor. I pulled one loose while working up there and had to compare it to the rear a/c to see where it went.

My heat pumps have been stopping after 30 seconds to 3 minutes between 4 & 6 PM. After a while I realized the whole coach was losing AC power.
With my lights, music & computer on 12 volts, it was not obvious the problem was not just heat pumps. The inverter was on, so even if the TV had been on, only the heat pumps would have gone silent when AC power to coach was lost.

A TRC Surge Guard protects my coach from bad shore power due to mis connection, open grounds, low voltage, high voltage & excess ground wire current.

At utility pole I measured 119.9 on L1. L2 was 129 VAC.
Probably the TRC Surge Guard is opening when voltage on L2 exceeds 132 VAC.

Are you sure your coach has power when the AC stops?

One of my heat pumps has been replaced due to repeatedly tripping breaker but problem was in electric junction box between heat pump & plastic filter grill in ceiling. Yours might have bad wire connection in same junction box.

Well, 24 hours later and all seems to be well. THe AC ran yesterday after the initial startup hickup. It worked last night and has been cycling this morning OK. Maybe its going to work OK? We almost cancelled the rest of the trip to make a dash home to have it looked at.

Your problem may be caused by the RFI (radio frequency interference) generated by floresent lights. The interconnect between the various components of your HVAC system is flat ribbon cable with modular jacks to connect the components. This cable is without twist or shield and will pick up electrical noise with ease. You may find that your system worked well during the day when your don't use lights, but in the evening the trouble starts. Let me know if the hypothesis fits - it did for me.

Here is a long shot but you should check it. Pull the front A/C return air cover in the living area. You should find one or two connectors up in the well that look like telephone in-line connectors.
Undo one at a time and give them a visual exam to see that all the internal contacts are lined up and not depressed out of the way.
Check the second one. Do not interchange them as one may be a reverse contact connector. Also, you will find one behind the thermostat and one in the back A/C vent cover but I suspect that if this is your problem it will be in the front. Good Luck!

Well, this intermittent a/c or heat pump seems to be a recurring problem on at 2002 and 2003 Allures. At least from what we have read on this forum, it only occurs on the front unit.
We have been battling this problem for over a year. My husband is a retired HVAC manager and he is puzzled. At the moment, we are in a state park in Kentucky - the front unit will not work. Prior to our leaving home Sunday, the unit had been working for weeks while parked at home in West Virginia. However, last winter it failed to work in Hilton Head South Carolina and also in Punta Gorda Florida (although a few times it worked in Florida after being in "demand" mode for a couple of hours).
The main logic board has been replaced in the unit on the roof, as well as the thermostat and the two cable connectors in the ceiling. We even ran a cable direct from the thermostat to the roof unit - still nothing. The capacitor looks fine - and since the darn thing worked at home all summer, our logical conclusion is that it only works on West Virginia electricity!
At the CC East Coast reunion last spring Bob Lee told us that a new CC would solve the problem. But - when we get back home later this week we will try to track down any and all ground wires for the unit. We encountered extremely rough interstates on this trip and perhaps something is loose (that we haven't already found).
And, like other reports, the fan works fine. It isn't the reversing valve either, since it will not work in a/c or heat mode.

In the past some post were written about the ballast from the florescent lights ringing causing problems, but maybe Fred could chime in on this. TWI 98 Allure 30255.

We had a similar issue and I finally found it myself after replacing T-stat and couplers. The rear unit was the culprit. Found out that the AC unit was not tightly bolted to the roof, no danger of it coming off but just loose enough to allow a tiny bit of water to drip directly onto the "phone connector" and cause it to corode then occasionaly break contact to cause me all my troubles. I heard something "sizzling" overhead in the unit early one rainy morning, pulled the cover and tracked it down. Got a new phone coupling, be sure it is the special one or disassemble and reconfigure the standard one. All is fine now and the bolts were tightened too! Allen and Virginia

We had the thermostat replaced and the unit seems to be working better. Time will tell. We're moving up farther North in a couple of days and maybe we won't need so much AC. Thanks for all the input from the group.

After our trip to a Kentucky state park, we are back home in West Virginia and the front a/c unit once again WORKS. This has become a humorous situation for us. Almost every part has been replaced, yet the unit chooses to work only at home.
When time and weather permit, we will check for a loose ground wire somewhere. The only difference between here at home where it works and parks/resorts where it doesn't work is that we are plugged into 30 service here versus 50 amp other places.

I'll report again when there's a change.
