CLEAR COATING

I know there have been hundreds of messages re: clear coat repair. I have a 2001 Intrigue and the clear coat on the edges of the roof is flaking off. I've checked with Artistry-In-Motion and they want $2500 to repair, reseal, etc. Bottomline, IS IT WORTH IT? My coach is kept uncovered in central California. I do wax the roof once a year.

Hi, I think you'd be fighting the same battle somewhere down the road if you re-do the clear coat. I had my coach roof done with a fiberglass compatible enamel. I won't tell you how cheap the job was done by a friend because there'd be a traffic jam in his driveway. It will last much longer and the color match is perfect. Just my opinion. Good luck.

I will tell you. I repainted my 95 Magna, roof.
Using a clear coat is out of the question. The UV radiation penpetrates to the fiberglass and breaks it down. That's what has caused the peeling. fiberglass is held together with a polyester resin. Over time the resin degrades, chalks becomes water soluble. This leads to a loss of adhesion and peeling.
I used a two component acrylic urethane that matched the cream color on the sides of the coach. It's been three years, looks great, should last forever.
I did it myself, $150. Mostly for tape, plastic sheeting. Paint was free. don't ask.

Dave,

Had the Paint Dept in Chino do ours two years ago. IIRC it was just over $2K. Used paint and it matches perfectly. I suspect they are closer than going to Oregon.

I'm a research chemist for Akzo Nobel. The Sikkens brand that Country Coach uses is from Akzo's automotive group. I made my own paint.
Sikkens is good, so is dupont emron urethane. There are other automotive coatings mfgs. that are good. Since you ask.

My no cost solution was to simply remove the clear coat down to the ridge moulding on the sides and back of the coach leaving the clear coat only on the front cap. Removing the clear coat was easy, done with a razor blade and patience. Now the entire roof matches and I use 303 aerospace on the roof 2x a year. Looks good, no streaking, no more flaking clear coat.

I'd think so. The imron material was around in the 70's, Between then and now, they had to change due to the environmental regs. I'd have to check out their website to know for sure. Imron was a acrylic urethane., two component.
