I need a rear tail lens assembly.

Yahoo Message Number: 40127
Does anyone know where to find a right rear lens assembly for a 05 Inspire. I know I can get one at the OEM desk at my local RV store. Just looking to see if I can save a few $. I removed the lens. It is made in Taiwan. It has also been modified by grinding down the two alignment tabs, which could tell us that it was made for something else. Humm!!

Thanks
Gil

The Inspire tailights for at least 04-05 are Ford F series pickup from late 90's to about 2004 I think - except stepside. Go on line and take a look at the pictures, it's easy to see which fit. Just do a search for "Ford F series tailight" and all sorts of stuff turns up including cheap OEM. Be careful that many are NOT certified to meet legal requirements - such as US DOT.
I ordered replacements with about 21 LEDs just for the stop/turn function and now people behind me can see my turn signals. The change is so obvious I have seen drivers hit their brakes to let me in. Seriously.
Dump the OEM stuff and get brighter LEDs. The OEM stuff may be fine for a small Ford pickup but I'd rather make sure I am seen for sure. Make sure the LED count is large, some of the aftermarket stuff is as poor as the OEM.
FWIW the headlight/turn signals are Ford Explorer of similar but slightly different vintage.

Bob,

I also have an 05 Inspire and have been considering the LED lights but have not found a good source. Many of the after market type that plug into the existing 1157 type plug don't look like they would be adequate. Do you remember the source of the 21 LED bulbs? Side note is that the Headlight Switch is also Ford (I think Thunderbird) and I had to replace to get my road/fog lights to work.

CHECK COUNTRY COACH PARTS AS TO WHO MAKES THE TAILLIGHT ASSEMBLY, IT'S PROBABLY A TRUCK TAILLIGHT. CHECK YOUR LOCAL JUNK YARD FOR THE PART.

There is a place out of Eugene Oregon that has Class A over run motorhome parts. Mostly the high end,I'm sure someone out there know's the name. If not write back and I'll run out to my Motor home and send you there wed site.

CC parts is probably your best source for procuring the tail light assembly. Last year I needed a new headlight assembly, I called CC and got the part number, checked a couple of local parts houses and found that they would have to order the part and the price was higher than CC parts department. I got mine from CC parts and got it quicker than the local parts houses would have gotten it.

The following are links to the type of LED tailight I purchased last year. The ones I bought are DOT certified. Don''t know if these are but they are a similar design including the ability to replace burned out LEDs.

Thanks Bob:

Great info. Now those are tail lights!!
My right lens and possibly the left has burned a very large hole in the assembly with the bulb just hanging by the bulb. I know it sounds crazy. I checked it myself and could not believe what I saw.

How difficult was it to replace the driver side assembly? And what had to be removed? Did you replace them yourself?

Thanks again Bob and thanks to all for your input

I got the subject line of a follow-on message messed up so not sure everyone got some important info on this tail light swap. To confirm that and answer your question:
The housings of the LED tall lights are larger in the back of the housing than the Ford and require that some of the fiberglass body behind the lights be opened.
My original lights had also been letting in diesel soot and dust and added to the dim-in-the-first-place problem. So to make sure little to nothing could into the new lights I used metallic tape to cover everything up and seal it yet allow removal/replacement in the future.
Yes, I did it myself. It took me the better part of an afternoon to install the new lights. The passenger side just requires some contortions of the old body and the previously mentioned cut out of some fiberglass.
The driver side was a bit harder. I unmounted the coolant surge tank but left the hose attached. That was a b---- particularly trying to reinstall/line up the mounting bolts of that heavy steel tank with coolant still in it. I should have probably bitten the bullet and drained the tank and disconnected the hose. While that wouldn't make that part of the job a snap it is probably easier in the long run.
I recently replaced the air filter and I suspect you could gain easier access to the driver side tail light this way rather than moving the coolant tank. The air filter weighs a lot less than the surge tank as well. This at least gives you a few options. I'd be interested to hear what you do.
Hope this helps put the job in perspective. FWIW I feel the effort was well worth it. After I cleaned up the work area and put everything away it was dark. I put on the 4-way flashers and was amazed. The CG had little illumination and the new lights were lighting up half the CG! A huge difference and I firmly believe a safety improvement.

Bob,

I would like to change the tail lights to the LED style on my 2006 Intrigue. When you installed the LED lights, did you have to wire in a plug or did one come all ready wired, and you only had to plug them in?

Hi Joe:

The ones I bought use the same connector as is already in the harness. No change or addition was necessary. Simple plug and play.
