MCD Motorized Windshield Shades - 2006 Allure

Hello All,

Here are my experiences replacing the Z-fold drapes with MCD motorized Day/Night shades:

Removal of drapes and track is easy. I covered the screw holes by replacing the screws and using matching colored plastic screw covers found at local hardware store. The CC driver and passenger motorized sunshades were also removed.
The MCD unit has two rollers mounted vertically on a single frame, one for the Day sunscreen shade and the other for the Night shade. They were wired to the existing CC "Visor" switches on the left console.
The Day shade is used both as a full windshield cover and as a sun visor when driving.
Just lower the shade to the appropriate level. Better than the original separate CC shades since there is no gap in the center and can be lowered farther than the originals. I have found that using the Day shade in hot weather does allow heat to build between the shade and the windshield - affecting the TV above. I have gone back to using the exterior MCD sunscreens in hot climates and have not had this problem.
The Night shade did not provide full privacy since there was a gap between the edge of the shade and MH wall on each side. This was solved by adding a small wood strip covered in matching vinyl to the vertical windshield posts on each side. The shade now overlaps this guide and provides full privacy.
Installation and mods were done by Davis Cabinets - highly recommended.

I, too, am interested in replacing my OEM Z shades with something easier to use. Question - does the MCD actually curve around the front windshield? Harry

Being on a window shade-type roller, the MCD shades work only in a straight line. In the case of the Allure and others with a nearly vertical windshield, this is not a huge problem.
The MCD shade is custom made to fit in the best place nearest the windshield, usually just where the windshield glass meets the frame of the coach. It will bolt up under the existing cabinets, behind where the TV box sits. This does create some amount of "wasted" space between the windshield and the shade that results in the heat build-up described below.

To address an issue with the vertical shade hitting the back of the instrument panel hump, MCD has a solid metal rod running the length of the shade (to keep it straight and provide some weight) 6-8" from the end of the fabric. At the end of the fabric they sew in a line of small ball bearings to allow it to flex over obstacles. The solid rod stops at the top of the instrument panel hump, and the last 6-8" of fabric can flex over the hump and provide coverage.

I had Davis Cabinets build and install a wood cover for the roller so it is not visible under the front cabinets.

The MCD shade pricing varies depending upon the type of Night shade material, electric or manual shades, wiring requirements (their handheld remote or wired into coach) and other accessories. Their website has more details.

I got the windshield Day/Night electric shades, wired to the coach, with upgraded material, drivers window electric Day/Night shades with remote, and entry door electric Night shade with remote installed with wood trim and windshield guides. I had lots of other things done on a $6000 total bill but I believe the shades were pproximately $2400 installed.

2008 Inspire shade on the passenger side. I most likely installed them or the person that did works with me now. I don't think it is a bad motor, rather those shades are all programmable. You will see two wires on the end of the shade with little spade connectors or little round ends. Take a paper clip and put one end in each connector. This causes the motor to enter programming mode. You then should go to the switch and hit shade down, you should hear a beep, pause, then beep beep and the shade will start to move down. Its important to make sure you don't stop the shade till it reaches the point you want it to stop. Make sure you don't unroll the shade all the way. Than roll the shade up and when done, take the paper clip out, and you should be good. We always have had to program them, and with your shade moving a 1/2" at a time, your motor is good, but just needs reset. I hope this helps and saves you some money. Sam,

See my post on the solution to my shade problem. If you have the same type shades that I have, try the method I described and I bet it will work. The tech told me that if I released the button too sone while reprogramming it, then it would only move a couple of inches further from that point. If you need more info, I will try to help, or you can call MCD tech service.
