Dead House Batteries

I am in some real trouble and hope someone has some ideas for a solution. Due to a long stay at the service place, my house batteries are completely dead. I have a xantrex, prosine 2.0 inverter and new this year flood type Exide gc 145 6 volt hooked up in series house batteries. In the prosine manual it sets that dead batteries can be charged thru the 2.0 inverter/charger. After calling xantrex and trying their solution of disconecting shore power, then turning switch on and off, then restore shore power and re-connecting control panal, they said that I should have the display available. Well, that didn't work and I just have a message on panal that says memory error.
I,m hoping that someone can suggest a way to re-charge the batteries so that we can go on our trip this week!!!

Gordon, I suggest you get your generator going. You didn't mention the condition of the chassis batteries, hopefully they are charged enough to get it going. Once the genset is running, make some coffee and relax for a while. I'm guessing the Xantrex needs 12 volts to operate, so monitor the battery charge level. Eventually you'll get them up to 12 V, then try the inverter reboot.

You could also use an external battery charger to charge the batteries, might be the simpliest way. I always carry a battery charger with me in the motorhome which can be used to charge or jump start the coach if my batteries have an unexpected problem.

Have you tried running the coach at 1000rpms for 45 mins to an hour to charge those batteries?? I would give that a try with the shore cord disconnected. After that time, I would plug into shore power. If your display does not come back, access the back of the display and unplug the comm cable or all the plugs you see for 1 minute. Plug the cable or cables back in and see what happens. I am sure things will correct themselves and you will be able to monitor your batteries and they will be charging.

A word of caution is in order. If you are in very cold weather, there is a possibility the electrolyte in the batteries can be frozen. Make sure that the electrolyte is above the top of the plates. The batteries can explode.
