Ignition solenoid

Yahoo Message Number: 55955
I have an intermittent problem with my Intrigue. I tun the ignition key, and nothing happens. I hear a faint noise, but no lights, no step going in, nothing else. I turn it on and off a few times, and suddenly everything is fine. I suspect the ignition solenoid. Where, physically, is this solenoid, and does anyone know a part number and know where to get one?

I had my starter solenoid replaced last year, after blocking a fuel island in a VERY busy Pilot station for a few hours. Mine is located in the engine bay, passenger side on a rear facing bulkhead, just below the top lip of the bumper (easy to get to and inspect).
However, your symptoms with the lights and steps being inop would suggest to me a key switch, or relay somewhere in the system. Everything on my coach worked as normal, except the starter would not kick over. I used the boost switch and that worked a few times, but I should have investigated it then. The failing starter solenoid would work with a LARGE amount of electricity, but was on its way out.

Good luck with the cure. Let us know what you find.

Al,

I just threw my old one out, so do not have part number. I took a picture of mine on my phone and went to NAPA they found one that looked like it and I put it in several years ago it was a Bosch part. Located behind the knee access panel just in front of passenger seat.

Jack the solenoid you are looking for is available from most auto supply stores. It should be located behind the panel on your passenger side dash. If you are unable to locate at parts store I do have them in stock.

Al,

There is another solenoid that you need to look at. Open the engine compartment and look down to the right. There will be a starter solenoid there that will shut everything down. It is on the bulkhead that the fuel filters mount on but is in the engine compartment. Give it a good rap or two and see what happens. Replacement can be found at any auto parts store for about 20 bucks.
Mine died at 25,000 miles, I saw one on a brand new coach in the factory parking lot with less than 100 miles.

It may be, somewhere down the line an incorrect type of solenoid was installed. Be aware there are two types available, "intermittent duty", used for starting only, and "continuous duty" for things that need to stay "ON" for a long time. An intermittent rated solenoid will not last long used in a continuous application. Also, note the specified mounting orientation. My battery isolator solenoid was mounted horizontally, which caused it to operate intermittently. Re-installing vertically, as specified, solved the problem.
These links to mfrs' data sheets will give some info on types commonly used.

Had similar problem with our 02 Intrigue. Had to have several jump starts, replaced solenoid, every tech said starter was OK. After having to be towed to a repair facility, we insisted that the starter be replaced. The culprit was a missing cog in the bendix flywheel. New starter, no problem since. That was 3 years ago----

Hi Bo

Yes all the coaches have a ignition solenoid. Yours is most likely mounted in the service run bay below the drivers window.
We need to not confuse this with the start solenoid. The purpose of the ignition solenoid is to supply a continuous uninterrupted 12 volt source for the dash systems. This is what is being referred to as a continuous duty solenoid. Unfortunately most all coach manufacturers used a low amp solenoid and the result is earlier than usual failure. Echlin (napa ) has multiple style solenoids. But you will want to use an ST 80 or 82 these are 300 and 400 amp solenoids and will last 10 times longer than the 80 amp installed at the factory.
Now for what is being referred to as the start solenoid. This is a similar solenoid installed in the rear of the coach. It supplies dedicated direct 12 volt to the starter solenoid that is mounted on the starter itself when the key is turned to the start position. The ST 80 or 82 can also be used for this position.
We have found on many of the 08 Intrigue and Magnas that this start solenoid was no longer used causing a chattering of the starter when engaged. It is a simple install to add this solenoid to these coaches and solves the chatter issue.
Basically the purpose of these solenoids is to insure a reliable 12 volt power source to the components due to the long runs of wire that are involved in getting power from one end of the coach to the other.

Hi Bo,

I have installed hardwood flooring in sexeral coaches. Fortunatly there is more room between the floor and slide than we think. I spoke with Eric Olstrom this morning and He has moved into his new shop in Tucson and is all set up to do this type of work. Infact he is doing a tile floor right now. So here is his contact info give him a call and see if he can help you out.

Hi JD

My wife is thinking of hardwood flooring. Do not know if the slide would cause problems with scratching the hardwood.

Thanks JD

I'm familiar with the starter solenoid solenoid after replacing several times.
I have had fluctuations on instrument panel, odometer, engine hour meter.

Right now seems to be operating OK.

I'll watch and if further problems will look into it.

Do you know of any good floor installers in the Yuma area.

Thanks for your time.

Hi JD

I have a 2000 Magna. I replaced the ignition switch a year ago because no action when Ignition turned on This helped but at times I still get no starter, lights or step action.

Does the 2000 Magna have a ignition solenoid?
I have had to replace the starter solenoid solenoid three or four times.

Thanks for any information you can provide for me.

It should be located behind the panel on your passenger side dash. If you are unable to locate at parts store I do have them in stock.

Thanks, guys, I learn something every day here. A cheap relay is much preferable to a key switch itself.

Al,

I just threw my old one out, so do not have part number. I took a picture of mine on my phone and went to NAPA they found one that looked like it and I put it in several years ago it was a Bosch part. Located behind the knee access panel just in front of passenger seat.

I have an intermittent problem with my Intrigue. I tun the ignition key, and nothing happens. I hear a faint noise, but no lights, no step going in, nothing else. I turn it on and off a few times, and suddenly everything is fine. I suspect the ignition solenoid. Where, physically, is this solenoid, and does anyone know a part number and know where to get one?Al Colby2000 Intrigue 10979Currently in Apache Junction, AZ

I was following the post concerning the ignition solenoid. I own a 07 Magna #6751. Does anyone know if this has an Ignition Solenoid and if so where it is located?

Thanks

I have a 2006 magna the start solenoid is in the service bay under the driver's seat. I know very well because it shorted out on I17 south of Flagstaff and left me stranded for 12hr. till a mobile rv repair could get to me and find what the problem was. On the 06 it is on the right wall at the top right inside the bay door.

Thanks for the reply. I looked in that bay this morning and I didn't see anything I'll look harder. I assume you ment Ignition solenoid rather then start solenoid.
Thanks
