Questions pertaining to a 1998 Intrigue cummins 325 hp with high egt

Yahoo Message Number: 61596
I'm in need of some group help. I own a 1998 intrigue 36'[ #10513] with a 325 hp 12 valve mechanical cummings. The previous owner installed a Banks stenger with an Aero turbo muffler. He died and his family took possession of the coach and determined thru Cummins the turbo needed replaced. Cummins installed a stock turbo but did not change the injection pump back to stock[Banks changed the setting]. Now I have a maximum 21# boost before I reach 1300 degrees on my egt. On level ground driving 65 mph my egt is 1000. On even minor inclines I'm constantly having to back off to keep my egt's below 1300. Banks will sell me a turbo refit fo about $800. I dont know what to do. My MAIN interest is increasing my fuel economy, currently about 7-7.3 at 65 mph. Do I go back to stock, or install the Banks turbo, or do something else I'm not aware of. As you can see I need help If any of you have some experience or suggestions, PLEASE let me know.. Thank You Bob Currie

I owned an 02 Newmar Kountry Aire that came from Newmar with an ISC 350 HP that came from Newmar with a Banks package that they advertised as 400 HP. I would guess that this is the same basic engine I had. I had an air compressor failure that took out the complete engine. When Cummins put it back together , they put it back to stock. The banks package , basically took the stock engine, Installed a pyrometer in the exhaust, and put a Banks computer between the standard engine computer and the fuel rail. The pyrometer senses exhaust leaving temperatures and applies more fuel , which raises the exhaust temperature, when given more fuel. It limited the fuel once the exhaust temperatures got to 1200 degrees. Based on what I read from your post, I would guess that the Banks module has not been connected. The connector from the ECM should go to the Banks computer and from the Banks Computer to the Fuel rail. In ordinary circumstance the wired plug ( about 12 to 1 wires goes from the Cummins ECM directly to the fuel rail. You should check if Cummins did not hook up the Banks computer. My bet is that Cummins did not hook up the Banks computer because of warranty issues. My Newmar did not have a special turbo. Once it goes through the Banks computer the turbo would go up to about 30 PSI and then cut fuel back , so as not to exceed 1200 degrees on the pyrometer.
Hope this helps

Thanks Ron for your imput. Your 02 cummins is different than my 98. An early 98 is a mechanical engine. 02 is electronic. I wish it was that easy..Agin thanks Bob 10513

I am no expert, but I think you could find a stock Cummins fuel plate and install it yourself for less than $800 and a couple of hours work. (A TST fuel plate sells for about $200 and instructions are on the internet for installation. Also, Banks has instructions for installing their fuel plate. Just reverse the process.)
That fueling reduction should help with your temp readings. My rig gets hot with a stock setup when going up a 6% grade at 95 degrees and towing.
I have 300hp and 31,000 lbs of coach and have averaged 7.3 mpg over 8 years with the 8.3 mechanical.

Hi Bob, I installed a Stinger on a 93 Pace Arrow Diesel and there was a mechanical piece that was installed in the fuel plate, I think they called it an Outto Minder. It had to do with fuel distribution. Look on the internet and see if you can find the Banks instructions for installing that Stinger Kit. You should be able to buy the piece from Cummins and restore the engine back to stock.

Hi Bob, me again. I went to Banks web site and found an installation manual for the Stinger on a mechanical 8.3L engine. If you have any problems finding it, I can upload it to the "Files" section of this board for you, its in PDF format.

Hi Fellow CC Owner, I would have your turbo waste gate for test only! disconnected a small rubber line to the Waste gate actuator, Plug to line leaving the Engine with a Bolt and Clamp. Next make sure all Charge Air Line rubber hose line CLAMPS ARE TIGHT! LOOK FOR SIGHNS OF TURBO BOOST AIR LEAKING BY On ther Metal Lines! Also suggest using a accurate boost pressure Gauge. I only guessing at one time all this worked after the changeover. I like Banks Systems. I would do above first. A good Diesel Mach. will do this for you and get a Quote first. Ken Retired Cat Tech. 99 Allure 30356 BTW Exhaust temp is really high Dirty air cleaner or bad Exhaust temp Ga. The mounting of the Pyrometer should be at the Hot House of the turbo outlet elbow.

I have a 1998 vintage Dometic refrigerator that won't cool the refrigerator side below 58 degrees; it would usually cool down to 42 degrees even when outside temperatures were in the high 80's.The freezer remains normal at 8 degrees. Does anyone know the cause of this problem or have solution to get the refrigerator section colder

A couple years ago at a rally an older Dometic Tech gave me A "resistor" to plug in line at the rear of the refrigerator (outside). That helped the refer to cool down a bit better in hot weather.
I don't know the specs on the resistor. Not all the techs at the Dometic booth were aware of the fix.

I was having the same problem with my Dometic Model 1492.
There is a sliding thermostat on the fins at the top back off the refer. To get the temp to go down the thermostat needs to move up. I know, seems to be opposite but that is what a Dometic tech support told me. To get the temp to raise move the slide down.

Hope this helps.
