stone chips in windshield

Yahoo Message Number: 5794
I just rolled over 17,000 miles on our 03 Allure, and I now have a total of 5 stone chips on the windshields.
Am I just lucky, or is this par for the course? Seems like the smallest stone leaves a chip. We got two just yesterday, one stone large enough that it totaled the driver side windshield.

That one was large enough that I could see it coming at us, like the cannonball in the movie Patriot.

But the second was so small that you could hardly hear it hit, but it also left a chip.
Just wondering...

Bill,

They have stone fix kits nyou can buy from an auto parts supply, that you can use for a temp repair so the chip or crack will not spread.

I didn't need him but several people had chips fixed during the rally.
I hear that water getting into the chips creates a problem for the windshield repairers, so it's a good idea to put a piece of Scotch tape or the like over each chip 'til it's repaired.
I also understand that the chip repair is so effective that it's covered by your insurance policy. I guess they figure it's either $ repair or $$$ replacement.

Dick, you better check with your insurance co as to whether chip repair is covered. I believe it's going to depend on how high is your comprehensive deductible as compared to cost of a windshield.

Thanks for the replys, everyone. I have called Holland Motors in Mich, they have ordered a new driver's windshield for me, will have it installed when I get back to Mich from Prescott, Az. They will fill the chips in the pass. side also.
I suppose by the time I get out to Eugene for the rally, I will need the services of the roving chip fixers.
I was curious if others felt the glass was easy to chip. Seems so to me, the smallest little thing seems to chip it. I got 3 in the driver side glass on this trip to Az. The last one looks like it was hit with a baseball bat.
