Question about a tow vehicle

We are trying to figure out what the best vehicles are for flat towing behind our Country Coach. Any info would be greatly appreciated(we are new at this!) Thank you. Steffi

Steffi, most folks will tell you the tow they own is the best . . . that's human nature. You first need to tell us what you need/prefer/must have in the vehicle.

We tow a 2011 Ford Flex, after 6-7 years of using an F150 PU with driveshaft disconnect. Flex in put in N key in on and go. Only issuse is slight 12v drain which can leave battery dead after 24 hours of not starting so I don;t leave it that lone without startig. Have used the Flex for a year and like it.

It depends on your needs.

Most any standard transmission can be towed.
Some automatic transmissions can be towed.
We have a Chevy Colorado pickup 4 door, 4 wheel drive. Easy to set up to tow and tows great. Some people put tonneau covers on the bed and haul chairs and stuff. We haul a Honda Ruckus scooter in the bed of the truck.

Steffi Someone, some time last year asked the question, which CC was the best. Like Lee says 99.5 % said the best one was the one they owned !! Your best bet is to get a January issue of the FMCA magazine which lists the vehicles that can be towed, along with all other pertinent info. Also the decorum on the Forum is to post your coach year , model, and serial number. That way , when you ask a question- at least about the coach- those members who have a similar coach , can best help you.

my fellow rv travel group all have jeep grand cherokees, they are light can haul alot of weight, inside and on the roof, and have an easy transmission disconnect. We all use roadmaster tow bars and brakemaster units. Hope that helps

We tow a HHR. It's a great toad. But it's a pain if you want to go off any of the main roads. It also has a very low mounting level so a modified hitch is required.
I think I would go Jeep if we were to make a change.

Hi Bruce I picked up your coach # and see you have one just 12 # after mine#11266. I have a 2001 36 ft Intrigue with 2 slides. The lr slide is the one that has the hydraulics in the living space under the sofa. Have some oil leakage there. Do you have the same slide setup? If so have you had oil leakage? We tow a HHR. It's a great toad. But it's a pain if you want to go off any of the main roads. It also has a very low mounting level so a modified hitch is required.

John - I have a Jeep Cherokee and had major issues towing --- battery constantly died....but my car was 2 wheel drive - dont know if that entered into it - but all kinds of modifications were made to the car to try and remedy this situation - I went thru my AAA roadside service in first 2 months of being on the road. They knew me so well that when I called AAA, they said "hi Jan" anyway, after talking to lots of other folks on the road towing Jeeps, they experienced the same issue with battery loss - Just trying to give you a heads up on this issue I experienced - better to make sure ahead of time than go thru what I did on the road..... jan

We have towed a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and a Jeep Commander. On both we had a transfer case that could be put in neutral. We had the battery discharge problems with the Grand Cherokee, but because it wasn't necessary to have the key in the ignition of the Commander, there was no battery problem. We now have a Buick Enclave. Set up for towing is very easy and it is a very comfortable ride when we are driving it. There are fuses to be pulled on the Enclave, so we put a by-pass on it.

Not sure what your requirements in a tow car are. Mine are more about comfort while checking out the local scene. I've owned many different tow vehicles, in fact more then I care to confess to. Now that I'm 55 it's really all about getting there without knocking out any dental work. I for one, am not a fan of Jeeps (been there done that 3 times). I prefer to keep my filling where they belong. In my teeth. No flaming me kids...Just the way I roll at this age.
Like I said i'm all about comfort. I tow a Lincoln MKX. Like a Ford Edge. However MKX is a bit more refined like A/C (I can sweat like a pig, but no more) and heated seats (whatever). Sky roof (don't know how I ever lived without this gives very open feeling without messing up ones hair!) and hook up is a no brainer, turn key and place in neutral. Even I can remember this.
Yes, it's no light weight @ 4600 pounds. But again, I'm not getting blown off the road by 18 wheelers either. I've towed this car 30K miles so far with NO issues. Only down side? Drinks fuel like a drunken sailor...However in its defense... I have a very heavy foot. I hear tell the newer ones get far better mileage. It is a great tow car. Only wish my CTS "V" sports wagon was towable. Gotta love 465 HP in a grocery getter. I told you I have a heavy foot ;o)

We have been towing a '00 Jeep GC for over 100,000 miles and the battery has never run down. It is a 4x4 with the manual transfer case so just put the trans in park, the case in neutral and tow.
As you can see, we don't trade vehicles very often. Once we get one that works, we keep it.

Do have to say that the new Jeep GC's are very comfy.

Lee is right. We already owned and loved our '03 Escalade EXT when we bought the LEXA. That vehicle was supposedly not towable. We had a small electric pump installed to circulate the transmission fluid, and an air cylinder installed on the master brake cylinder. The key must be in the on position to unlock the steering wheel when we tow. So, to eliminate battery draw-down and to stop odometer readings from climbing while towing we installed a cut-off switch on a battery terminal.
To tow we simply hookup the tow bar, plug in the coach electric plug, plug in the coach air supply, open the battery cut-off switch and go. We've towed that Escalade all over the USA, including to Alaska and back! Never a single problem. We are still towing it! We have a total of 120,000 miles on the Escalade EXT and it still looks and drives like new.

Hi Bill,

Ours is a 40ft 2 slide unit. Our front slide has the rams in the top of the slide as well. Never seen them but that's what HWH tell me!!! Our only fluid issue is the occasional drip under the coach in the front. I once over filled the fluid tank and 5 years later it's still dripping.

We have two daily drivers. Both are Jeep Grand Cherokee Ltd. Both are equipped to be towed. Both can tow up to 6,500 lbs. Both carry 5 people in reasonable comfort.
They are easy to prepare for towing. No battery discharge problems on either one during 65,000 miles of towing (except for one event of owner stupidity).

Stay away from the Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner. I went through 2 transmissions. Don't believe the owners manual. Thank goodness for a warranty. I now tow a Jeep Wrangler and it's great. Some years back I towed a 03 Accord and that was fine.

I belong to the FMCA 4x4 Club and there are over 300 members most of whom flat tow jeep wranglers. The new 2012 Wrangler has the Penstar motor which is a huge improvement over earlier models. The jeep is a great vehicle for exploring the back roads and places like MOAB and the Arizona desert.

We tow a 2011 Cadillac SRX. The tow base plate is well hidden behind the grill. Its easy to hook up and easy to pull. The dealer gave us alternate towing instructions which makes it easy to make ready to tow. The owners manual has us pulling fuses but the new instructions don't require any of that. The only requirement is to start the car and run it for 5 minutes or so to lube the transmission. We do that about every 4 hours of towing. Also our mileage went up about 1 MPG because the SRX was much lighter than the Tahoe we previously towed. Don't plan on tapping into the Caddys wiring for brake lights. After about 10 minutes of electrically idle time the car shuts down the electrical system! Took us a while to figure that one out! Mike & Pen Hergenrather

FYI - depending on who's baseplate you have on the SRX Caddy, there has been issues with the baseplate design. We've installed over 6, but less then 12 SRX's tow packages and recently have seen problems with the baseplate working loose with under 5k tow miles. What the current solution that our shop & the manufacture came up with is a added brace on each side. I don't know if the others are having issues as I haven't asked or looked at there design for similarities, but just double check your baseplate for looseness, if any it must be repaired.....

I tow a Chevy Silverado 4wd. Push button to put in neutral, and pull 1 fuse to eliminate electric drain. Ready to go in 1 minute.

I am really surprised that the Honda CR-V has not been mentioned. They can be had with front wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. We are on our second CR-V, now a 08. It has a flat floor , so DW has a place to put hand bag and other goodies without cramping up her feet space. When you 01 was totaled, she would not even look at a different make.
