Refrigerator mystery

We have a nearly 10 years old Dometic side-by-side which has given us very good service. But, one day recently I found the frost on the fins melting. I worried this might be the end of service for the unit but next day the fins were cold and the box was working just fine. This cycle of defrost and chill has happened several times and is still happening. The unit is a gas/electric and is not frost free or self defrosting. This is happening while on shore power for an extended time. Anyone experience this? We would normally defrost about every three weeks.

Probably time for a new thermistor which controls that cycle. Easy cheap fix.

Do you have the climate switch on normal or high humidity? This would be a cycle which prevents ice build up. May want to make sure it is on the normal cycle.

Based on my and others experience, you are probably operating on borrowed time. 10 years is about the life if the unit is unused for extended periods. Have you checked to see if you see any yellow powder in the outside refrig area? About $2,000+ should buy you a new cooling unit for your refrig. We were quoted a price in excess of 4K for a new Dometic.

Good luck!
