Electrical Issues

Momenta ago I heard clunking from the area of the transfer switch, the same sound whenever the 3 minute delay is up and shore power goes live in the coach, but it kept repeating every 10 seconds. I went out to the park pedestal and found the 50 amp plug was way too warm. I tripped the circuit breaker and pull the cord. One of the 4 prongs, at the 9:00 position, is charred.

What just happened?

You plugged into a power pedestal that has a bad female plug on it. One side of the power line was making connection and the other wasn't. Have the campground come out and replace the female plug or move to a new site.

Off hand it ound you had a looe conection on that pin the park might have had a reciptal that was not tight on that pin on your plug that caued a gad conection so the pin burnt the clunking of the transfer rekay when it tdied to conect with the bad conection the voltage would drop and fall out so when the load would drop out the relay would close then the load would drop the voltage clonk and tart again Wcg

This may not be your problem but worth a check. Last summer while staying at the same CG, we would hear the transfer switch kick out. We assumed the power at our CG was the problem and when checking voltage at the surge guard it pointed to the power supply (CG). While checking power one night, after it kicked out, I happened to move the hand wheel on the power cord winder and the transfer switch came back on. At that time I had the key on by-pass thinking my surge guard might be our problem. Further testing of the cord winder pointed towards it. I removed the unit to find burned brushes and contact rings. Problem gone after repair of the winder.

This turned out to be a bad supply in the pedestal. It fried the inside of the 50 amp plug so once I replaced the plug, and switched to a different pedestal, all was good. The only hard part was the 70 mile drive to find the replacement plug on a Sunday.

Thanks for your help.

Just arrived at a park near Yuma and can't seem to get shore power to work correctly.
Connected to 50 amp and the electrical meter on the pedestal is turning.
The power got past my surge protector and my Smart EMS shows I'm connected to 50 amp service.
My AC devices will work on the inverter only, can't seem to get power from the shore power. I ran the genset and the Smart EMS shows a 0 amp draw and with the inverter off none of the AC devices will power up.

I whacked the transfer switch with no change. Any suggestions?

Have you checked the breakers on the inverter? Just a thought.

Jim, look at the lights on your Surge Protector, they probably show you have only one of two lines being allowed to come through from your Surge Protector.
Ofter the 50 amp receptacle tongs don't fit tight against you plug blades not producing a strong connection.

Wonder why his generator didn't work?

This turned out to be a lose connection in the inverter. Very strange that all AC power was affected and not just the normal inverter wired circuits. Once the lose connection was corrected we had full power again.

Happy New Year all.

Hi Jim, Im in Yuma also for the winter. Sounds like your Inverter is taking power from the Battery and powering your A/C Loads only from the inverter going on how I read your post. Transfer sw feeds your Circuit Breaker panel Main Coach from the Transfer Sw. to power the AC to the inverter also roof airs etc. and sounds like your not getting AC to you Circuit Breaker Panel? If your not an electrical type seek pro help. On our coach from the other owner the transfer sw. faild. If your EMS is portable I would for test having varafied you Campground pedistal is CORRECT then remove the EMS for test if possable, then plug shore power cord to the pedistal But sounds like running the generator does the same thing can you run your roof airs? Keep us posted! I Know of a Place that can repair it called Starlite Solar but Yuma also has many other repair shops. Keep us posted and Enjoy Yuma. Ken 99 Allure 30356

That's one of the two legs of 110vac maybe due to poor connection there or at the transfer switch, would be my first place to check.
